View Full Version : Showing Post Count in Users Info

As we all know some people are already posting to get their post count up.

I know this is a matter of maturity of posters, because everyone should understand that the important is "quality not quantity".

Still, i was thinking that if the post count wasnt shown in the users info some of the spam would be stopped, because "there would be no point in having all those posts if you cant show them" - according to the spammers mind.

I know ranks would be shown and you could get an idea of how many posts the other poster has, still, since the number of posts required to get a new rank is kind of "big", it wouldnt make such a difference.

Anyway, this is just an idea.

i personally think that is a good idea

if that was introduced, which i think it might be, there would be alot less spam as you would not have a clue how many more posts you need

im sure RFS is considering getting rid of post count

We are working on getting the post count shut off right now. Ben is currently away at this time, and he is needed to edit a couple of lines in the forum directory. I am hoping by Monday to have post count disabled permanently and replacing the rank list with:

??? - Please Read The Rules
??? - Newbie Penguin
etc

then i can only thank you, that will certainly make things a lot better, except all the "where is my post count" threads that will appear.

We will have a pinned thread explaining the change and if they are too ignorant to read the rules and announcements, then it looks like they will just have to suffer infractions, eh?

i have no doubt about it, but it's gonna happen for sure.

well, hope you get it working by monday.

thanks.

even with pinned thread there will still probably be around 10 threads saying "wheres my post count" or "no post count?" or "OMG postcounts gone" etc..

It is rather tricky to set up.

I think this is a good idea, because like i said in my guide (link in sig), some users are spending their whole day posting on here, and trying to boost their post count by doing so.

Why have them at all? Post counts do nothing but prove that you've posted <Insert Large Number Here> threads/posts. Now, weather all of those threads are quality or just junk is a different story. I noticed RFS said something about not having post count in a thread, I agree 100% with him. Take away Post Count, it has no use.

I wouldn't mind. In fact, I think it's a brilliant idea. I'm sure spam would drop at leasst 15% in these forums.

I like that idea. Unfortunately, lots of users on this forum believe they will be deemed "cool" or "popular" with a high post count. With the post count off, people will have no excuse or reason to spam.

So, essentially, there wouldn't be ranks, correct?

Well done, RFS, another great move on your part.

Ranks may either be thrown out or have the number of posts required changed to ???.

And since posts won't be displayed, I suppose count could just be shut off entirely and ranks taken with it. Have everyone as "Registered User".

I think shutting off the ranks would be good too. If everyone's rank was displayed the same, then everyone would be seen as equal and there would be no reason to try to get a better one (like certain users have done by posting excessively). Of course, there will be infraction ranks, right?

I think you should shut off post count, and no ranks. But you should make it, if possible, that it isnt "Registered User", and everyone is the same rank, but it has to do with penguins.

If not, i would be perfectly fine with "Registered User", i just mainly want post count shut off since people wont be obsessed with having theirs really high.

Having a lot of posts per day is different than posting :coin: :coin: in each and every one of your posts.
Not feeling that replacing the number of posts in the sticky with '???' would be a good idea, since they would just post more to find out, and, eventually write them down. Could be passed down from time to time. Stupid, but they could do that.

Overall shutting down post count would ruin their purpose to do their thing.

Well if we get rid of count but keep ranks, people will still have a guess as to what their count is, so they will still rapidly post until TA DA, they hit the next rank.

If the count goes, the ranks have to go as well.
