View Full Version : How to use avatars and signatures.

An avatar is an icon that displays under your name when you post, and a signature is a picture that displays under your post... when you post. Here is how you can use them.

AVATARS
Using a premade avatar from the forums:
If you want to use an avatar we already have on the forums for you, go to Edit Avatar (http://penguinforum.miniclip.com/profile.php?do=editavatar) and you will see a collection of avatars with little bubbles under them to click. Select the avatar you want and click Save Changes.

Using an avatar you have made:
If you made your own avatar, here are some things you should know. Avatars cannot be any bigger than 150 x 150 pixels and 20 KB. The forums also will ONLY accept PNG, GIF, and JPEG formats.

To use your avatar, scroll down past the premade avatars. There will be two options, to upload from a website (like Imageshack) or from your computer. To upload from a website, you need to upload it onto Imageshack (http://www.imageshack.us) or similar service. Once it uploads, copy the "Direct Link" URL into the box and click Save Changes. To use one from your own computer, click Browse and find the file on your computer. Once you do, click Open and click Save Changes.

"My avatar won't work!!!"
If your avatar is 150 x 150 or less, 20 KB or less, and is either GIF, PNG, or JPEG, you will have no problems.

SIGNATURES
Using a signature you have made:
If you made your own signature, go to the Edit Signature (http://penguinforum.miniclip.com/profile.php?do=editsignature) page. Here you can put in text just like a post, all of the tags you use in your posts will work here except [IMG].

"How do I use an image in my signature?"
Uploading a signature picture works exactly like avatars. Please see above for the instructions on how uploading works. However, the size limits are different. The image MUST be a GIF, PNG, or JPEG and it cannot be bigger than 500 x 100 or 40 KB.

"It's uploaded, now it won't show up!"
To show your image, add the following tag into your signature. You do not need to put anything between the tags:

Wherever you put this in your sig, the image you uploaded will display.

"How do I make my image into a link?"
Making your picture into a link works the same way as regular words in your post, add this into your signature:
(www.miniclip.com)"My signature won't upload it brings up a blank page!"
Do not use the "Upload from URL" feature. It does not work.

----------
Having your signature permissions stripped:
Users that upload offensive images or rude comments may have their profile permissions stripped.

When you get a naughty boy/naughty child/naughty penguin rank, it's usually because of an inappropriate picture. So, seeing as you recieved that rank, it means that you are prohibited from uploading your own pictures.

Naughty Child - If you use inapropriate avatars or signatures after being warned, you will find yourself without those priveleges, and with this rank.

I wasn't using an inappropriate avatar or siggy......

I had a green day avatar and this in my siggy

If it was, thats a rip off cause I just changed my sig/avatar last night and it says right there you have to be warned before they take away the privelages and I was never warned.

Well, if you're sure that it wasn't an inappropriate picture, maybe you said something inappropriate. Or, there is that small chance that your avatar may have been offensive (the link doesn't work so I can't tell). Of course, I wouldn't know. You'd have to take that up with RFS.

Maybe it was seen as offensive it because its a picture of Stewie acting like a mentally challenged person. Personally, it doesn't offend me one bit, but it may very well offend others on this forum. And for the sanity of this forum, it was probably removed.

If it's saved as a .PNG (which I'm almost sure it is) then try saving it as a .JPEG. The quality might lower, but the only person I know who's good at reducing file sizes is Jimmy. Talk to him, maybe. He was enthusiastic doing mine once.

So, you're file size is 20KB over the limit, correct? Well, if you save it to GIF, the quality may go down. Unfortunately, the only way you can animate it is through a GIF or flash animator (and flash doesn't work on here).

You could also try downloading Easy GIF animator, the filesize comes out lower.

Unfortunately, the lower the file size, the less amount of color variants there are and the lower the quality will be. What you want to do is get a GIF animator that can animate the image and save it as close to 20 KB as you can without exceeding it. But of course, if the colors don't matter much, then I'd say go for Easy GIF animator.

I can't upload my signiature. It's the right sizes (about 21kb and 400x100 pixels). I don't know what the problem is. I tried adding it in by uploading it from the computer, I tried from a web source. For some reason, it doesn't work when I add it from a website, it just goes to a blank page. What's wrong with it?

You know there are the sigpic tags in your signature text box. Put text between them and then it appears when the mouse hovers over the signature.

Example:

Gamerboy helped me put this here

Would produce your signature and when you hover over it would say Gamerboy helped me put this here.

You most likely saved the file under an invalid format. You must save it as one of these following formats in order for you to use the image as a signature:

-JPG or JPEG
-PNG (not recommended)
-GIF

If you do not know how to change the format, just post the link (if you can) and I'll see if I can convert it to the proper format. ;)

Yeah, just remember that the file cannot be larger than 500 x 100 pixels (500 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall) and no larger than 40.0 KB. ;)

The Dimension limits for this filetype are 500 x 100. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 300 x 180.
Huh? I don't get it. Can somebody help me?

Balthasar
26 November 2007, 09:52 AM
The dimension limits say that any signature cannot have a pixel height larger than 100 pixels and cannot have a pixel width larger than 500. Your signature height is 180 pixels tall. That is 80 pixels past the limit. That means you must decrease the pixel height of the signature in order for you to be able to use the signature.

Does this make sense?

What if a avatar or signature has videogame blood? would that be ok?

If it's an "M" rated game then I don't think using it would be wise. A little blood is fine, but if it's buckets and buckets of gore and giblets then you should probably pass on that.

Does a dragon having blood coming out of its neck count as bad...? :P

This thread is not about how to MAKE anything, it's about how to use the forum software so you can upload things you have made or found online.

As for animations there are a number of programs that let you draw and animate in the program itself or frame by frame. I have used Babarosa GIF Animator since 2003 to make all of my animations, and I sometimes use Adobe Flash CS3. Babarosa is free, Flash is not.

You need to save it as a GIF, PNG, or JPEG. You have it saved as something else. Probably a bitmap.

Umm how do you put quotes under your signiture?

You quote the post, copy it, go to User CP, then paste it under "Edit Signature".

How do you put somebody else's quote in your signature? I've seen other people do it, but I don't know how to do it.

Press "Quote" on their post. Then copy the whole thing (Right click > Copy). Then go on edit signatures. Right click > Paste on the edit signature, then press save signature.

I did, but look at my siggy now. The red bold print is what I want, but it doesn't have the quote box around it.

I see.

Put
at the end of the red text. It will become a quote.

For the avatar or signature?

The avatar's dimmensions are 150x150 pixels and a signature's dimmensions are 150x500.

They are 150px. X 150px.

If you need it to be fixed, post it in this thread (http://penguinforum.miniclip.com/showthread.php?t=44183) and ask for it to be resized to forum limits.

The steps upon putting signature and avatar is really easy, you just need to follow instruction. My signature is already visible, This forum is really great.
