Wait! Did you hear that whooshing sound?
A small asteroid buzzed by Earth Monday, though only real astronomy geeks in the Pacific would have noticed.
The rock, estimated to be no more than 200 feet wide, zoomed past our planet at an altitude of 40,000 miles at 1:44 p.m. universal time — or 8:44 EST.
Dubbed 2009 DD45, it was discovered only on Friday by Australian astronomers.
Forty thousand miles may sound like a lot, but it's only about one-seventh of the way to the moon, and less than twice as far out as many telecommunications satellites.
Had 2009 DD45 hit the Earth, it would have exploded on or near the surface with the force of a large nuclear blast — not very reassuring when you consider humanity had only about three days' notice.
According to the Australian news Web site Crikey, the asteroid is likely to be drawn in by Earth's gravity, meaning it may return for many more near misses in the future.
If that asteroid was just a little bit closer, everyone on earth would have been completely destroyed. My science teacher was talking about it the past few days in school. What are your opinions on this?
EDIT: If you want a video about it: http://www.foxnews.com/video-search/m/21948331/asteroid_almost_hits_earth.htm

Well, we aren't dead, so I don't mind. Besides, we shouldn't exactly be talking about it much, since even if we DID know about an inevitable blast, we couldn't do anything about it. Warning the public would only cause mass hysteria.

One nuclear blast isn't enough to kill everybody - but it would ruin a lot of people's day.

No, but they said if it did hit "It would have wiped out 500 square miles of real estate all of New York City and all of London."
Also, my science teacher was saying it had enough to destroy earth, so I'm not sure if ALL of us would have been dead.

Hmmm If it would have destroyed all of New York City I would have been dead.

One, concentrated nuclear explosion won't wipe out all life forms on Earth. And considering the fact that it was a rather small meteor in comparison, I think the scientists were overreacting to get people worked up and scared and keep them reading their articles, or in other words, more buisness for them.

Yea, I heard about this from Philip Defranco.
You would of thought they would of told us about that.

Yeah, I didn't see it on the news or anything. People in school were talking about it so I decided to look it up.

Whoa. That's scary, but a a explosion like a nucular bomb or whatever it said wouldn't destroy the Earth.
Well, at least we're not dead, and that's good enough, amirite? :D

It was only 40 yards wide. That's nothing compared to asteroids out there that are the size of Texas or Alaska that could come at us if they are nudged correctly. We were hardly "almost wiped out". What scares me is that it was spotted so late. Lets hope that whenever the Texas or Alaska sized asteroid comes hurling towards us, we'll spot it decades in advance. :(

Yeah cuz if we spot one of those to late. It might not work out to well....

Well, the supposed planet asteroid thing Planet X or "Nibiru" is said to be visible soon and that's supposed to mess with out poles. So, maybe. But if not, I'd hope to be hit first that way I don't have to suffer. It's like "Oh look, there's a friendly little aster-"

Well, that would have sucked, but it would have been during Science, and before Math so it would be all good.

That one meteore wouldn't of killed everyone on the face of the planet.

Yeah, we lucked out this time.
We need to keep close on this, because a major one hasn't hit since around 10,000 years ago or somthing my science teacher said. :s

All the photos of Nibiru are very fake looking and don't look anything like a photo taken in space, and all the people who think it's real say that the planet is inhabited and the US government is currently in contact with them.

That asteroid was obviously sent by a person to try to kill Chuck Norris but he just looked up at it and that thing got scared and went somewhere else. That is my theory.

WOW! It was only 200 feet and something of that size would have killed us all. That seems nearly unbelievable because it is so small. I guess it is the fast speed of it that would cause the disaster.

If would have been destroyed by the heat of it coming in at the ''super high speeds''
This wouldnt have meant anything, we would have gotten a pebble falling outta the sky. Only one dude would have died looking at the pebble that was falling.

If it was only 200 feet,it wouldn't have done very much damage.Plus,a nuclear blast can't kill everyone, even a very large one.Anyways,if it did make it into the atmoshere,it probaly would have burned up.

I don't think so. I am pretty sure the scientist's or what ever would of brought the atmosphere into account.

Oh god, if New York was wiped out we would all die for sure.
Especially if it hit the Pacific. Mostly me and some Tasmanians would die straight away.
