California wants a strict law on emissions. Here's a small part of the article:
California's proposed restrictions would force automakers to cut greenhouse gas emissions from tailpipes by 30 percent in new cars and light trucks by 2016, which could force them to boost the fuel efficiency in new vehicles to about 36.8 miles per gallon.
The reports also say that if this law actually happened a lot of people
would go to Nevada to buy more powerful vehicles.
THIS SUCKS
What is this world coming to?

I think it's a good law. A study shows that if we don't fix global warming soon, the consequences could be irreversible for another 1,000 years. My parents have Mini Clubmans so we are energy efficient!

It is an excellent law for me, because fossil fuel is running out, we need to save it, so I'm agreeing this law.
EDIT: It will happen on 2016.

It sounds like a good idea to me.
Cars don't need to have big engines.
We already have the congestion charge for entering London.
It's a pain if you go every now and then, but if you're commuting everyday for work and being charged, it adds up. It makes you think "Maybe I'll take the train today".
Not that this law is the same.

Why isn't the rest of the country doing this? Less of a carbon footprint and better mileage, you couldn't ask for anything better. Win.

I think unless there are required levels before 2016 then it is just a law to appear green. It is a good idea as increasing miles per gallon is a good thing, not only less damaging to the environment but less range and cheaper too.
You can drive a sports car at around 40mpg if you drive the right way, trying to evade the law by buying cars from other states is possible, but people who do might end up losing money.

I don't see the point in fixing a problem that might not even exist. I guess its alright to be clean and nice to Earth. =P
Hmm...if we can go to the moon, how come we can't build a car that doesn't run on gas?
Well, obviously because of the massive amounts of jobs that would be lost. There may be some what of a solution to that problem (kinda has to be solution). Maybe these laws should just wait awhile. I for one believe this co2 car problem will be dealt with soon.

I heard that it would most likely be adopted by all other states so people won't go buy cars illegally.

It's a good thing. The Bush administration didn't allow it, but Obama is! :D
Anyway, most Californians don't need to worry about it, if they need a new car, they don't need to buy an SUV when they're commuting.

What I just don't understand is why my father has got to pay more than €400 on taxes and insurance on a Lada that doesn't even cost as much! And he's to pay that per year!

I guess it's to fund more efficient cars?

Yeah, well, it is because of that, but then the cars here are sky high! For the new Ford Fiesta (clicky (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/Ford_Fiesta_MK_VII_(seit_2008)_front_MJ.JPG)), the prices start at about €8000! Now let's say that a family cannot afford to buy a new car, they have got to stay with what they've got (in our case it's our Lada), and then the taxes are more sky high!!

What exactly do you mean by that? I'm from California. :| We're not all that naiive surfer dudes, you know.
I think it's nice, because even if global warming is a myth, it's still nice to clean up the air.

I think he meant "They always pull for stuff like this".
Aslong as I can get my Ford Raptor it's ok.

I'm sure you can, but Top Gear really hated it. Just letting you know.
