I am hosting a contest, for no real reason. There is no prize, but the winners' names will be featured. This requires a LOT of thinking. It is a brain teaser. First three to answer this brain teasing riddle will be featured on this thread. Also, If you're answering this brain teaser, it must be in RED.

Ok, here is is.

THE MISSING DOLLAR

3 Friends check into a hotel room and decide to split the cost of a room, which costs 30 dollars for the night. They each give a 10$ bill to the hotel manager. Then they get up to their room. Suddenly, the manager realizes that the cost of the room is really 25 dollars. He calls a bellboy and tells him to take 5$ up and return it to the 3 friends.
The greedy bellboy realizes that the friends don't know they are supposed to get any money back, so he decides to keep some for himself. He gets to the room and tells the friends there's been a mistake, and gives them three dollars back, one for each of them. Smiling, he keeps the other 2$ for himself, and no one is the wiser.
But wait. The bellboy gave each of the friends back one dollar. But that meant they had each spent 9$ on the room. 9$ x 3 is 27$, plus 2 is 29. But the three friends had originally paid the manager 30$.
Where did the other dollar go?

The room costs 25, if each of them gets 1 dollar back it's 28. Add 2 dollars and it's 30.
They don't pay $9 each, they pay 8.333333333333333333(3s go on) dollars.
I won right? I bet know people will post after me and try to reword what I said and pretend that they found it by their own.:P You might even see some "whoops I didn't see the post above"s.

Their room has a price of 25 dollars, if each of these guys gets 1 bill back it's 28. Add 2 bucks and it's 30.
These 3 kids don't pay 9 bucks each, they pay 8.3333333333333333 (and so on) bills.

Right solution is given below (in white as it's harder to read accidentally):
the original $30 is spread up as follows:
$25 is still the hotel till/safe
$2 is what the bellboy took
$3 is back to the friends ($1 each)
25 + 2 + 3 = 30
The way this riddle works is that it puts the 27 they paid for the room plus the 2 dollars of the bellboy rather than minus which gives the 25 which is how much the room should have cost.

oh and I forgot to say the riddles name is the missing dollar

and gamerboy, you explained how the brain teaser sort of worked in your perspective, but the answer really isnt complete...
the answer im looking for isnt how the thing works, its where did the dollar go
In my My Pocket?
In the Drier?
maybe the dollar jumped out of the bellboys hand! maybe there never was a dollar! maybe it flew to canada, because he wanted to meet billybob! lol that was random, just like the others!

who knows where it could have went

LOL

You said each of them paid 9, that's the part that made us get 29 at the end.

The equation is wrong. Each kid payed $9 dollars, which adds up to $27 dollars that they spent. Then the $2 that the bellboy stole should be subtracted from what they spent to get the $25 which is the actual price. The $5 dollars were split among 4 people, not 3 people. There is no missing dollar.

Did someone report this to the police? The poor dollar must be afraid. :(

The missing dollar is here: 9$ x 3 is 27$, plus 2 is 29. You didn't add the dollar sign or say "dollars" there while you did that to each and every time you addressed money.. :P

Yeah..I'm wrong. =DD

The motel gets $25
The bellhop gets $2
The men get back $3= $30

Each man actually paid $8.33 for the room, plus $0.67 (ish) stolen by the bellhop ($2/3) which is $9, times 3 is $27. Add on the $1 each, and you get $30.

Am I right. You hurt my brain O.O

My old math teacher brought this in one time. We worked on it for like 3 days before anyone got the actual answer. I always thought that answer was incorrect.

I believe that there is no missing dollar. Money actually came into this equation. NOWHERE does it say where the $5 dollars came from. I say the hotel has $30 and that is the manager's $5. The bellboy took $2 dollars from this. $30 + $5 = $35 - $2 = $33. The three friends got 1 dollar each, and we return to $30. No missing dollar. The three friends were actually given money.

This is my other reasoning:

If the $5 did come from what the friends paid, then the hotel has the $25 dollars. The bellboy took $2 out. After the friends get their $3 we balance out to $25.
Hotel:__$25
Bellboy:_$2
Friends:+$3
_______$30
Each friend STILL paid $10, which is $30 - $3 for the friends = $27 -$2 for the bellboy = $25.
Either way there was no missing dollar, whether they were given money by the manager or they did not lose or recieve anything.

Final Verdict: NO MISSING DOLLAR

I can't see if other peoples answers are right but here is mine:

The question is worded oddly. Look at it like this: The $27 spent by the men includes the $2 kept by the bellhop. Thus, the men paid $27 (the bellboy kept $2, and $25 went to the desk clerk).

I couldn't really understand some other peoples answers so I don't know if someone already got it.

I've seen this one before, but since you guys already answered it, the extra dollar is with the three guys that bought the hotel room.

I don't even think that was the right answer.
