TACOMA, Wash. - A 6-year-old boy was killed and a man was hurt after they were hit by flying chunks of metal while watching a monster truck rally at the Tacoma Dome on Friday night, officials confirmed.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the boy as Sabastian Hizey of Puyallup.

The gruesome accident happened just after 10 p.m. Friday during the Monster Jam, when an apparent mechanical malfunction in a truck's driveline, under the cab, caused metal fragments to spew out toward the crowd amid a burst of sparks.

Witnesses said the red truck was driving in circles, and a spray of metal pieces came off of the truck and flew over a safety barrier. The pieces knocked the man off of his feet and hit the boy in the head, causing them to bleed and creating a rather gruesome scene.

"It was just a horrendous scene," said witness Gabe Mausten. "It was very disturbing scene."

After the boy was hit, witnesses said a man in shock rose up from his seat and began yelling, "My kid is dead! My kid is dead!" The boy's father was not injured.

The boy and the injured man were treated at the scene and taken to an area hospital by ambulance, fire officials said. The boy later was declared dead by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.

Witnesses said after the accident, people began leaving in droves but event organizers continued on with the show.

"It was kind of angering a lot of people that they didn't even stop the show," Mausten said.

Witnesses said some people in the crowd began throwing beer and glass containers at the truck from which the debris was believed to have come.

Wow, I've been to a lot of these monster truck shows when I was younger and Ive never seen anything like this. My condolences to the family of the boy. The driver of the truck must feel horrible.

I have wanted to go to a Monster truck show, but I think I don't want to anymore. They didn't even stop the show!

That's sad to think about. I've been to one before, and it can get very dangerous. On the bright side the father is okay.

That's horrible. They need more safety at those shows.

My Mom told me about this, it's sad that he was just at a show and died.
If I was the driver I'd be super sad and probably quit.

Even netting around the sides of the arena (like ice hockey arenas) could of saved that boy.

Poor kid, and I feel sorry for his dad. Having to watch your child get hit by a piece of metal and start oozing blood :(

Well, I guess this means that I won't be going to the monster truck rally that is coming to Madison soon. Not that I was going anyway...

Stuff like this can never be completely safe. Accidents happen every once in a while. Once at a baseball game, the batter threw his bat into the crowd by accident, and it hit a little kid. He was hurt, but he survived, and got to keep the bat. The batter was thrown out of the game.

Jesus Christ, Tom. Would you stop it with the depressing stories already? We get it, life is a vicious creature lurking at every bend, now leave us to our merrymaking.

POOR KID I WANT TO HUG HIM. Well, not anymore because I imagine he's not looking so good right now. Seriously though, this is why you should never go to a monster truck rally. Those places are dangerous. He should have just gone to McDonalds.

I remember when I went to a monster truck rally with my dad, the creepy thing is, I was six years old just like the boy :(

Yeah, I think it's pretty strange that they have nets to protect the audience from tiny, flat rubber balls at hockey games but not nets at monster truck rallys to protect the audience from huge metal pieces that can tear one person into three persons. And how the hell could they just continue the show like nothing had happened?!?!?
