HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A 10-year-old is recovering in the hospital after he was hit by a driver in east Houston who then fled the scene. That's when the youngster's nine-year-old best friend jumped into action, carried him home, and called 911.

Memorial Hermann Hospital officials tell Eyewitness News that Eric Kelley is listed as stable. He and his friend were on their way home on their bicycles around 7pm Tuesday when police say an SUV ran a stop sign at Avenue E at Cesar Chavez and hit Kelley.

Police said the vehicle stopped long enough for someone to get out, remove the bike from underneath the car, and leave the scene.

In the meantime, nine-year-old Ruben Nuncio said he threw his injured friend over his shoulder and carried him home.

"His head was right here where my hood's at. I carried him all the way to Sherman. Then when we got to the house and his mom started running out and crying. Everybody started chasing after the car," said Nuncio.

"My son was in shock, telling me that they didn't even stop at the stop sign. They ran over him. They didn't ask if he was okay," said Ruben's mother, Jessica Nuncio.

Houston police found the SUV at a nearby home. The front bumper was damaged. Officers took two people in for questioning, a man and a woman. Police are not sure who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The family of Eric Kelley said it appears Kelley will be okay.

This has to be the best example of a TRUE friend. I tip my hat to that kid for doing what he did. It's people like him who make the World a better place.

Interesting, I'm assuming it wasn't truly a year age difference, it was that one of them had recently turned 10 and the other would soon.

But anyways, yes this is a true hero, and the world needs more of these kind of people.

This is a great example of our world. The drivers could have killed the kid just because they didn't stop and ended up running away. On the other hand, the kid picked up his friend and carried him home. Total opposites. We seriously need more people like this kid and the world would be a much better place.

He deserves a medal of honor or something. The kids lucky that he had such a good friend!

How does this show the person is a true friend? What he did in that situation was something most people would do, I know that if an acquaintance of mine was in that situation I'd probably do the same thing. I mean what other choice would the kid have had? To just leave him there...?

I think it's because he's only 9. Most if not all nine year olds think about Star Wars and Spiderman. Not saving their friend. If he was a little older I don't think it would be in the news.

I edited my post while you were replying to it, what I said in there was what other choice does the kid have? I'm sure that a nine year old would have enough common sense make the decision to help his friend rather then leave him there.

He could've left him there to go get help. But instead he took the initiative of carrying him home. Call it what you want.

Like I said before, I'm sure most nine year olds have enough common sense to know that they shouldn't leave their friend lying in the street alone right after getting hit by a car.

Yeah, but most would probably sit there in shock. He did something.

I'm not saying that what he did wasn't heroic, but what he did had nothing to do with him being a "true friend".

What you guys don't realize is that moving an injured victim is a very risky path. Depending on his injuries, carrying him might result in the kid being crippled for life.

While I'm sure the kid meant the best, I just don't think it's that heroic. Wouldn't you help your friend if they needed you? I think any true friend would do that. Now try saving someone you don't know or have never met before, that is heroism in its truest form.

I agree.
It was still a good thing he did, but 9 isn't that young.
If someone they liked got hurt in any way, they'd still have the instinct to help them in some form.
Children have that from quite a young age. I remember my friend breaking his arm when I was there at the age of 5 and wanting to help him, but I guess there wasn't a lot I could do.

I don't get this.

I respect the kid, and think what he did was right.

But I know that I would do this for somebody, and my friends would do it for me and each other.

To be honest, I thought it was standard procedure as a friend, or not...
It's called respecting others...

But, yes, well done to the kid. It's good of him to do that :)

I think a younger person would be more likely to call 911 than an older person.

If they were just friends because one had a rare video game or a beta hat on CP, would that have happened?

Well he sure as hell wouldn't leave him lying in the street, he would take some form of action whether it be calling 911, getting his parents, etc...
