For those of you who don't know, Jim Valvano was a great man. He was made famous, when he coached the 1983 NC State Wolfpack to the improbable odds of a national title. Then, he went looking for someone to hug. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFolL4Is-sU(The guy in the suit running at the end)
In June of 1992, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Then 1 month later, he learned it had metastasized.
On March 4th, 1993, nine months after being diagnosed with cancer, he delivered an amazing speech at the ESPY awards.

He died on April 28, 1993.
But during his speech, he announced that he and ESPN were beginning to fund a cancer research fund, which has since raised $80 million. He was a great and lovable guy, and ESPN has an annual week in his honor. If you watch ESPN you will see plenty of things about him this week.
