Why are people saying garbage like "In december 21st, The day of judgement, the world will end"
Now I am christan (Not fully 100%) but even so, I know that December 21st, 2012 is not doomsday. It's just some stupid mayan calander prediction. I know that only God knows judgement day and not humans. I know that God will come in a random time. (It could even happen in the year 5020 or something!) I know that God will come when technology is fully advanced (Its not that advanced yet!) But why do people assume that at 2012 at of all the years, will be the end of the world? How did this rumor come across the internet? I just don't get it.

People believe this because the mayan calander ends, then, they believe the myans because they predicted how long it takes for earth to orbit the sun I think, and they were only 30 seconds out and they didn't have technology back then, I don't see any reason why that would be doomsday so I don't beleive it.

They also thought it was going to end in 1998 (or was it 9?). Did it? No. The same with August 8, 2008 and June 6th 2006.
I think that this "doomsday" is a bunch of bull. It's just made up to scare people. Although, they do have those prodictions from numurous sources, which is pretty scary. IMO, the predictions are just a coincidence, they are all from different time frames, and if I were to say "The world is going to end June 6 6666" I'm sure there, in some point of human life, was a person who thought that also.

my mom has been alive for when they said both of those dates but this one is more serious because of the atom smasher. It was supposed to run months ago but there was a technical problem and so now they can't test it for a while.

Nononononononononononononono *deep breath* nonononono.
A lot of people don't even know how black holes work. Black holes are caused by large masses (like stars)'s gravitational pull collapsing. Then they suck in a lot of stuff. But guess what; Black holes actually let out most of what they suck in.

Yeah, It will shut off the magnetic field, And we will all be fried.
As for the atom smasher, it already happened two months ago. :l It was a huge track sending atoms at high speeds to crash together to simulate the big bang. People thought that since it was supposed to be a nearly eact miniature, it would make mini black holes, Which wouldnt stay mini for long. But, They failed to realize stars would have to form and colllapse first.

I hate to get religion into this discussion, but I was thinking about that too. I was watching a show, and it was a show about what exactly the anti-christ is. People say that an anti christ is walking around us right now, and he has the looks, has the brains, and will get power. (That show was from 2005.) They say that he will promise "change", and that everyone would fall for it.

But, there's still a chance of it happening at any moment considering how horribly things are being ran. So, I'm not too sure. If you're going to get religious I'm just going to remind you that the bible states quite clearly that no one can predict the end of the world.
Anyways, I think this "2012" business is just another one of those things that will never happen. How many times have people predicted the end of the world? How many times has it happened -- oh, wait, we're still here. If we do get wiped out then, well, too bad. I guess that's that.

Yeah, but why would everyone be so worked up just because it's the Mayans? They were more technically advanced than most societys at that time, but why would that mean they could predict the end of the world? The also did things like rip people's hearts out for their gods and sacrifice virgins. There is also no explanation for HOW they predicted the end of the world. Today, we are way more advanced than the mayans, yet no one from our time has logically predicted the end.

The mayans never predicted this would be the end of the world, its just when their calender ends, on 21st december 2012, all the planets are align, I find it amazing how the mayans figured this out.

There are alot of threads about this but I would like to point out that I believe the world not end in 2012. This thread shows some of the reasons that it will end and why it won't.
Reasons:
In a manuscript Isaac Newton wrote in 1704 in which he describes his attempts to extract scientific information from the Bible, he estimated that the world would end no earlier than 2060. In predicting this he said, "This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail.
Isaac Newton was one of the great Physicists of all time.
There is absolutely no scientific proof of the end of the world in 2012. Any predictions you may read are garbage, put about by frauds and hoaxers trying to sell books or scare people.

A brief video from another scientist.
John Major Jenkins and others[11] believe that an alignment will occur when the sun rises above the horizon on December 21 2012, at which point the sun will rise in the middle of the Milky Way Galaxy, thus causing an alignment between the earth, sun, and the Galactic Center.[12] It is suggested that this event will cause numerous changes on Earth. However, the event is only a visual phenomenon from the Earth's perspective, which is caused by the precession of the equinoxes or the 26,000 year wobble of the earth, and thus only changes our perspective, not the actual position of the earth in relation to the galaxy. In short, there is no gravitational force or radiation to be expected from this event because other than the tilt of the earth; nothing will be any different from what occurs in any other solstice

The Bible says...
If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act aswell. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good an Evil, has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.
The Bible
The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:
Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and
Sacrificing Virgins.
Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.
The Mayans
Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012
Sun Storms
Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.
Atom Smasher ( Which has now been taken out)
Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.
Super Volcanoes
This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.
The Physicists
We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

The Bible
IF Armageddon was to start in 2012, we either would be in the significant millennium or the seven years of tribulation (there are some disagreements about what comes first). And we know that isn't true.
Besides Armageddon isn't the end of the world, Armageddon actually means the final battle between good and evil.
The Mayans
I haven't see anywhere were they are acknowledged to have held the belief the world will in 2012.
Sunstorms
The end of all electrical power isn't the end of the world. There are plenty of remote tribes which get along without it, at least they'd survive.
Atom smasher
They already have particle accelerators and nothing bad has come of them.
Super Volcanoes
The pressure under a dormant (or active) volcano is always going to build. But is any where near enough for an eruption?
The Physicists
Why do we have to be overdue? Why can't we just not have giant catastrophic events?
The Magnetic Field
If it is so overdue couldn't it be possible that the phenomenon doesn't exist and we were wrong about it?

Do I think 2012 will happen:
The year will happen, yes. :P
Do I think the world is going to end:
Noez.
Is there a slight possibility that this could happen?
Anything can happen...
But, people have predicted thousands of things before, and did half of these things actually happen? No. I think all these things about 2012, are just big coincidences. The Earth has been around a long time, and I'm sure if we go back, with all the lives that have been on the earth, that there's going to be a day predicted that other people have predicted at the same time. (If that makes any sense whatsoever to you. xD )
What we should really be worrying about is that big sexy asterioid thing heading towards us withen the next 20 or so years. Scientist should be trying to find a way to nudge that thing away, or else that could be the date the world or at least half of it, ends.

Eventually, the world will end. But if we waste our time trying to figure out when... what difference does it make WHEN the world ends? I think it's a waste of time to worry about when the world will end. Enjoy life while you have it.
And according to some "smart" people back in 1999- the world ended 9 years ago. Or atleast was supposed to. What's the "bright" reasoning this time? They just sit in a room and go, "Hmm, let's get the people talkin' 'bout the end of the world. What sounds like a good day?" and someone else goes "I like the number 2012" and some one else will add "What about 2030, or 2060?" and they all decide to put a million+ theories and dates for the world to end because, hey, life is boring right? Or we don't have enough to worry about.
It seriously doesn't matter and trying to figure it out wastes what ever time we have until then.

I don't belive in the whole 2012 theory. First people thought the world will end on June 6th, 2006. Hey, it's March 22nd, 2009, nothing! :P
Now, after 2012 ends, people are going to say "The world will end on 2036"
After 2036 ends, people will say "The world will end on 2060"
Etc etc...

I don't see why people put such trust in what scientists say. In the 1300s, scientists thought that putting leeches on a person's body and stuffing their faces with flowers could cure the bubonic plague. Just because they think we're overdue for a catalyzing event doesn't mean the earth is bound to end. They're over dramatic and want attention for their useless studies. And to think, if they hadn't wasted their time on this conspiracy, we might have had a cure for cancer by now.

Another theory that has been backed up is that the mayans believed that when their calendar ended, there would be the beginning of a new age. So maybe 2012 will actually be a good thing.
