- THE HISTORY -
Let's Play is an Internet broadcast show that has been in some form of production since as early as August 2007. It was originally being produced & released by RFS Media Productions and Twisted Studios but was shelved shortly after it's first pilot episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9kYdf-09mU) was filmed. RFS Media Productions unceremoniously folded in the summer of 2008 and all of its active projects were canceled until the show was once again picked up by Twilight Foundry. Now, the end of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obsX9X1RmXs) declares that Twilight Foundry died in 2004 and "we barely knew ya", but this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e0_h_ZwKEs) says otherwise. In the aftermath of RFS Media Productions shutting down, Twilight Foundry re-emerged to carry Let's Play to completion in what may be its final shining moment. Channel F Productions was created in September 2008 to release the work of Twilight Foundry.

- ABOUT THE SHOW -
Let's Play is a blend of sketch comedy and commentary about bad and obscure video games. The show is hosted primarily by J Andre Bardin (The Radio F Show, Code BS) and Jason Gleckner (The Radio F Show) with special guest hosts such as Casey Steward (The Radio F Show, Code BS), Jimmy Forgus, and Jake Richardson (JAR TV). Each episode of the show features a new game (or games in some cases) and occasionally comedy sketches inspired by the nature of the episode's game.

- ABOUT TWILIGHT FOUNDRY -
Twilight Foundry was an online comedy troupe that was active from 2001 - 2004 and featured four cast members during its most active days. They existed solely online and were responsible for creating parodies and lampoons of popular video game culture, more commonly the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The group split up in 2004 when each member went their own way. With Let's Play being unsigned and the perfect opportunity to make fun of video games, Twilight Foundry came out of its four year hiding to take the job.

Well, we're back from shooting our first first first episode, E001 from our pilot season ("zero"). Our launch game was the ever-so-terrible "Make My Video" starring Mark Walhberg as his unlovable Marky Mark persona. We shot 33 minutes worth of footage and we look to trim that down to about 17 for the final show. Students at Texas A&M University (Corpus Christi) can get a special 10 minute screening of an "edited for time & content" version of the episode this December.

POINTLINE, the unofficial newscast segment shot to promote the Let's Play show was shot today at the Channel F Productions greenscreen studio (currently decorated and setup for Let's Play). Shooting went as scheduled and now the short video featuring some "stunt double" camera trickery is going into its editing stage. Stay tuned for POINTLINE hosted by J. Welcome to the set of Let's Play, where we'll be shooting the majority of the show. Picture 1 is a shot of our "graffiti wall" where the hosting and introductory segments will be shot. The wall is much larger and features all sorts of references to video games, production affiliates, and the show itself of course (yes, it says "RFS IS A DEAD MAN"). Second picture is a shot of the commentary set where the bulk of the show will be shot from. The hosts are seated on the couch and play the game, which is captured in realtime to a nearby laptop and hard drive. As they play, their commentary is picked up by a camera on the tripod, and the two videos are interlaced and edited for time and content. The last picture is just a shot of the entire place, you can see a little bit of everything.

The set looks dark and spooky, but that's because our lighting rigging wasn't turned on (all of the cords hanging from the ceiling are part of the lighting arrangement, which is incomplete as of this posting, we are still getting two smaller lights and a backlight for the greenscreen. Overall, all of the materials for the set cost Twilight Foundry in excess of $1,200 with a few more hidden charges on the way.

I retired from film to go "find myself", which was news that Jason was not too pleased to hear. He begged me to keep working on film so we made a deal that Let's Play would be my "finest hour" and I vowed to put every single resource imaginable into it.

That's actually dust, the studio is on the second floor of a woodworking shop. The graffiti wall is covering a giant lack of a wall where nothing but years of sawdust got in. We gave the place a quick cleaning just so we could work and breathe at the same time, we're gonna finish the job once all of our parts come in.

There is no underlying plot that unifies the entire series, but there are running gags. I don't want to spoil what season 1's gag is going to be. :P

We are shooting a special fake news segment ("POINTLINE") to promote the show. We've gotten the last of our A/V stuff, we are literally waiting on 3 more lights and we are ready to shoot.

As of today we have our complete array of A/V equipment and it has been tested in a mock "show" where we fine tuned the settings on all of our fancy gadgets. Everything is running at 100% and the only adjustments we need to make are to the placements of things like our consoles and cords.

The show will go into production after POINTLINE has been filmed.

Is this going to be solely on YouTube or somewhere else?

The show is being shot for Ziff Davis Media's 1UP.com Network. They are very interested in our media/press kit (high quality photos of the cast & set, a description & backstory of the show, and our 4 episode pilot DVD) that we are assembling. If all goes well, we will be a frontpage feature alongside their other similar series "Broken Pixels".

If 1UP.com ultimately dismisses the idea, then we have a number of other outlets that we are looking into. "Straight to YouTube" is our "Plan Z" if absolutely nothing works out.

Let's Play is an expensive independent production with a very high production value for the parts we have, some of which are television broadcast quality A/V equipment parts. We have very high expectations for the show.

"Wake Me Up Before You Go Go (To Blockbuster)" actually isn't a part of the Let's Play series. The Blockbuster video was just a standalone short produced by Twilight Foundry, we still do shorts that don't fit into our other series. :)

It's a Commodore game called "Ninja Scooter Simulator". It's not a game for the show because while we do own a Commodore console, we have no way of plugging it into our A/V setup - it's just a funny sounding game.

-----
And in other news I got just word (as in like 10 minutes ago seriously) that the rest of our lighting arrangement has arrived (two smaller side stage lights and a fluorescent backlight for the greenscreen). We also got in some extra A/V and electrical cables just to be on the safe side. We don't plan on having to use them but we have them just in case - better to be safe than sorry and have to stop production to buy more parts. That's no fun, I've had to do that before (Miniclip Information Agency).

But yeah like I said earlier, POINTLINE is going to be filmed this weekend and we look to have the special Let's Play promo "newscast" online by the following weekend.

Not being able to utilize Ninja Scooter Simulator is kind of a let down (but we will always be looking for ways to utilize systems that don't have proper plugs). I think everyone will be satisfied with the games we have chosen for the pilot. Our tentative pilot schedule is posted up on the first page in the episode list.

We have plenty of that, and like I mentioned, we own a Commodore 64. The problem in using outdated electronics is that they tend to not "communicate" well with newer electronics, such as 95% of the A/V equipment we have. For example, we're having to have one of our Atari 2600's disassembled and modified so it has composite A/V output because back int he 1970's/1980's that didn't exist, just RF modulators (a switch labeled "TV </> COMPUTER").

The Atari is for a possible future episode, though.

We are no longer RFS Media Productions, we're a simpler kind of comedy troupe. There will be a noticeable difference, but not much. By popular demand among the people we work with though, we're going to be borrowing the "Kung Fu" cold opening from the Magic Plate episode of The Radio F Show though.

Does doing this show take up all your time?

It took up a significant portion of our time to build it and set it up only because there was just so much to do. We had to put up the greenscreen, paint it white with primer, then paint it green. That was about a whole half day of work right there. Then we had to go funiture shopping for the couch and all of the stands and tables that the equipment sits on, and of course we had to load that up and haul it upstairs to the studio on the second floor. We also had to put the cardboard wall up and paint that, which didn't take near as long as the greenscreen but still look a while. We also had to build some light fixtures and whatnot, and hunt down all of these specialized audio/video parts which was frustrating to put it nicely.

However now that THAT is done, the rest of the show is just going to be a matter of taking a game console down there and plugging it in, putting the cast on the couch, and hitting "record". The really hard work is done now we just get to be funny. :P

EDIT: And speaking of filming, we are scheduled to shoot E001 (Marky Mark) today.

We're looking into GameVideos/1UP Network really. If we get accepted into their lineup of programming then we can't go uploading the episodes everywhere. We could upload teasers for the show though, linking to the full version.

I don't know how many videos we'll be shooting or how long the show's gonna run but I'll just say "we have a lot of bad video games". I retired from comedy because I no longer write satire anymore nor do I do stand-up or anything live like that these days. I had also quit shooting but Jason pleaded otherwise because I had a lot of expensive stuff that was just going to go to waste and never be used. I made an agreement that Let's Play would be my last project however long it lasts or whatever legacy it starts. I'm a different person now than I was at RFSHQ.

Wow, your green screen is working incredibly well.

The green screen doesn't "work" its just a painted wall.

It's his chromakeying technique that works.

Speaking of which, what method are you using to chromakey?

Technically we specially chose the material that we made the greenscreen out of (and the lighting) so in a sense technically it is "working". Since it's evenly lit we don't have much of a problem chromakeying it out of the picture. :)

Our editing software (Ulead Video Studio 11) has a chroma key feature which is what we use to take out the green and add a bit of transparency to the footage so you can still see the game footage with us on top of it, since reflections aren't solid.

With that said we have "somewhat" fallen behind on our shooting schedule. Regardless, we are going to be shooting Bomberman Act Zero tomorrow with Jake Richardson guest hosting again. Our last pilot is Bubsy 3D and from there we have skits and shorts to shoot. I keep saying it and I don't have a whole lot to show (yet) but we have some great stuff planned out. Seriously. Production of this magnitude takes a long time, especially when the cast and crew is largely unpaid. We've got a lot of expensive equipment and whatnot so we're completely serious, just takes a while to shoot. It's hard to explain really unless you've been on live sets as long as I have. :P

For Bubsy we are going to try and get our resident furry to show up on the show (one of them at least, and no, I'm not talking about me - because I'm in EVERY episode silly). If we can't get him (or her) to show then we'll have to invite someone else on. Probably Jaaaaake. :P

Bomberman: Act Zero was shot as planned. Jake Richardson reprises his role has a guest host for this episode.

Here is the standard fare screenshot of us laughing at something completely irrelevant.

And as a bonus our set blew up on us during shooting, you can see the video of that here:

If we could just freakin' play a DS on a Wii or port it to the television in some way we would so do this.

In the meantime, mind if I save this picture and add it to our gallery of pictures on 1up.com? :)

Just a head's up since I haven't posted any updates here in forever, part of our lights broke the last time we shot, and since the last time we filmed, the laptop we used to capture game footage no longer works, so we are kind of out a lot of important set pieces. No worries though, I just bought a "broken" desktop computer for $100 to replace the laptop. It's "broken" because the CD drive no longer works, but the rest is fine... I hope.

We are "ready" to shoot E003 - Bubsy 3D, our guest said she's ready when we are.

We have the computer problems rectified and now we just need some time to go down to the studio and fix the lights. They need to be repaired and replaced, and more than likely moved somewhere else because they're not cheap to fix and they're also a HUGE PAIN to fix as well.

With the setbacks we went out of production for a little too long, our January 2009 premiere date has been moved back to First Quarter 2009.

Okay everybody come back to us now, I know we have been delayed (been delayed been delayed been delayed gonna be delayed...) long enough, but we are still working on the series. In recent days a handful of fellow video commentary creators stumbled upon the early promotional stuff for Let's Play... and proceeded to tear it apart, which we can't blame them because the Marky Mark sampler and some of the other short skits we shot were pretty bad in all honesty. Their rudeness didn't phase the cast and crew much, it only let us know that we need to do a better job distancing ourselves from the similar series "Broken Pixels", which we intend to do by covering DIFFERENT games, including some short sketches, and just generally having a different sense of humor by means of a different cast of players.

To combat this, and to show that we've made significant progress in making the show better and funnier, we have decided to go ahead and upload our eight minute production screening version of Episode 004 - "Ice Ice Baby". This screener is only 8 minutes long (about HALF the length of the standard commentary for completed episodes) and was screened before an audience at Texas A&M University CC (more on that story here (http://penguinforum.miniclip.com/showthread.php?t=67573)). The TAMUCC version was edited and censored for time and content, this version is not. It is uncensored, and there is usage of profanity and some adult humor - we advise viewer discretion. We originally were opting to not show this screener to a wide audience because it technically gives away "the good parts" of this episode, which we feared would make people not want to watch the finished product. Regardless, we deem it necessary after not meeting our deadlines.

So, without further adieu, I present to you all (and everyone else outside of MCCP who is a viewer of ours) the Let's Play episode "Ice Ice Baby":

Jeez man... p0le dancing got me excited... xD And what is with freezing in mid-air..?

It's just a terrible game full of all sorts of antics. It is really sad that we can't simply cram ALL of the hilarious antics into one episode, because it would require a lot of tape to get it all. In the sewer levels we got some guys to start slipping and sliding (Billy Mays "AND FLIPPIN AND FLOPPIN") on some ice patches and it looked like they were headbanging dancing, and in the volcano levels there are meditating monks that when you shoot them with an ice ball they seriously say "uh oh" and explode. It's brilliant, really - you don't even need us to laugh at the game.

And in other news, Bubsy 3D's commentary will be filmed on Sunday, and Capt Fiskers herself (Nicole Winston) will be our 3rd guest.

I'm looking forward to your Busby 3D review.

Of all the games I've seen it has the worst level and character designs, and it is really repetitive.

I imagine it would be hard to do a good humorous review of such a boring and bland game.

It was hard to keep the episode funny, we might have to reshoot the episode with a new game in all seriousness since there was less laughter from the cast's end of the show just because it WAS so boring.

Most of the cast isn't "into" the show anymore. It's hard enough scheduling shooting, but for Bubsy 3D I was the only cast member who was really enthused about doing it. Thankfully the shooting was a bust and we don't have to use that episode.

For the past 3 days we have had shooting dates scheduled with both guest hosts William J. Richardson and Nicole Winston, however both of them did not work out and have been moved. Supposedly tomorrow we are slated to shoot and I have my fingers crossed just for the heck of it. I am honestly not expecting to make it down to the studio an be greeted by the required cast but in the event that I am, we are going to go ahead and shoot quite a few episodes. Currently planned include:
- ReBoot (PS1)
- Kileak: The DNA Imperative (PS1)
- Crusaders of Might & Magic (PS1)
- Syphon Filter (PS1)
- Yaris (Xbox Live Arcade)

We're running the gambit on several PS1 episodes with the intent to simply insert episodes from other consoles (N64, etc) in between them. We are also going to be doing away with our pilot season since we honestly no longer have any distribution plans for the show. Everything we've done thus far is going straight to season one.

I'm personally just trying to get these out of the way so I can focus on GatorAIDS.

Well here's another update for the morbidly curious. Let's Play is being picked up yet again from it's hiatus. We are considering the option to rename it "God Mode", since "Let's Play" is so ingrained as a fad of YouTube and Something Awful confusion between the two is inevitable.

With that said I am considering putting together the footage captured for the only 3 episodes we have and releasing them to see how well they are received. There has been overwhelmingly negative comments regarding the show, largely in regards to how we are apparently making a carbon copy of the show Broken Pixels (which to some extent is an accurate statement). If I put these out, can I trust that you all will pass them around to others so we can start to collect some honest opinions on them?

Just an addendum, the main reason we're changing the name to "Godmode: On" (that's the actual working title now) is because our third host, Jake, is on board as a permanent host - and the three of us are loosely the video game comedy troupe "Godmode", so the name just kinda stuck. If Stella can have their own show named after themselves, so can we. :P
