View Full Version : Club Penguin and Ads?

I hope this isn't taken the wrong way and starts a flame war but I was thinking about online advertising and club penguin. I know club penguin is against it, and has (YET) to put advertisements on their site or in the game (I hope ads never get put into the game itself)
But I was also thinking that some crazy amount of kids play CP everyday. I would say 200,000+ easily, some for long periods of time.

Seeing that they're focused in on that box while they play wouldn't it work to put advertisements on the side of the game? like in the white spaces?

Before you freak out asking me why they would want to put ads on the side
let me explain. The ads would most likely generate near to the same amount
of money that club penguin gets for membership. Seeing as they're starting to
sell cards, books, toys, etc, they could use all the money from the ads and toys
to run the game.

That would mean membership would be free or cheaper. Now I know that may sound
weird, yes they would lose a little bit of money but in the end everyone is happier.

I'm just saying it's an option, I'm in no way saying
this will happen or is likely to happen. Just throwing this out.

What do you think?

Don't wanna come off as a n00b asking for free membership
just a thought :)

I don't mind ads, it's fun shooting ducks when your find four opponent is on brb. :P

I would hate to see that happen. I don't like the ads they put up now.

Seeing as Club Penguin is respectable I doubt they would have any of those shoot the duck
and get a ps3 type things. I'm working on a rendering of what it would look like.

I highly doubt them taking away membership, or even lowering the price for that matter. Club penguin has gone from a happy-friendly game to a huge corporate money grabber.

^^^^ they're somewhat in the process.

here's a rendering that really sucks, made by me :D

If this was to happen, please god make them still.
If they were animated at all the whole game would lag
like crazy!

A few of the things in the first post are wrong. Using fairly old figures (and maybe inaccurate) before Disney was involved, there were around 700,000 members on CP and 12 million user accounts. Miniclip at that time had around about 34 Million unique viewers per month. If we use a $5 dollar a month membership figure to keep things relatively simple, the turn over would be around $3.5 million a month. (This isn't strictly true with commission etc.) Mutliple this by 12 for a year and we get a nice $42 million. Convert this to pounds using £1 to $1.8. (Not accurate, but perhaps the innaccuracies will even out). We get £23 million pounds, compare this to the figure of £20 million which I think was the turnover one recent year of miniclip. You can see that membership is the best way to go. Comparing that the profits are roughly the same even though Miniclip at that time was many times bigger.

Sorry for the fairly large post, containing lots of innaccurate figures, but membership makes a lot more money than ads.

DING DING DING! we have a winner! Its like Disney has turned CP into corporate madness. I know Disney didnt do anything to the game, but it just seems so different now. They never mention when the game is down now, becuase it has to be so perfect.

Yes, I totally agree with you! I'm not too happy about Cp's sudden obsession with becoming rich off of toys.:|

My opinion exactly. Club Penguin has randomly stopped being a small, happy company who's only focus was to provide kids with a safe place to have fun online. Yes, they did have a small shop, but not even the staff members seemed to care about it. Now CP is becoming a big, greedy, commercialized mess that's messing with little kid's minds, enticing them with RARE ULTRA COOL items so they'll beg their parents to buy more and more toys for more and more items, even if they already pay for a membership.:P When Disney first bought CP, I knew right away this would happen, but since nothing changed for a long time, I figured I was wrong and forgot about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few months, big ads for their toys are everywhere. I guess ads on the site would be okay, but only if they're for Disney because some ads on the internet aren't very appropriate.

That is a great idea,as long as there are no pop-ups!

No I would hate ads. They are so annoying and sometimes have pop ups that Mozilla doesnt block. I usually get distracted by them too.

Nyaaa, I wouldn't want that. It's too easy for advertisments to become virus-prone. That's what happens with a lot of sites. I'd rather have it the way it is, slightly advertised, but nothing to the point of something insane like World of Warcraft.

Contrary to most people here, I actually like the plushies and books/ future game. *Dodges random tomato that is thrown* Aww, what the?? Anyways, I'm okay with something along the lines of merchandise, but I mean really. I won't start to panic about CP until these things happen:

1. Commonly placed TV advertisments. There were a couple, but out of all these months the ads have been floating along slowly, I've only seen the commercial ONCE. (Which is good.)

2. Ads on the site. Okay, this is what CP said they'd never do, so little lights would be shining somewhere.

3. What I like to call, "The Neopet Effect." As in, major industries based off of this, more common commercials and such, and severely reduced "customer service." What I mean by this is, randomly placed bannings, and basically it's ALL about the money status.

If all three happen, or just three by itself, I will find a new site to hang out on and go cry in the corner. :P Either that, or go back to Moshi Monsters/Random Nintendo DS games. X3

What would really be the point of the advertisements? There are kids that play the game are like 4-9 years old. What are they gonna do to pay an ounce of attention to the advertisements?

And since it was intentionally made for younger kids to play, ads shouldn't at all be necessary. Club Penguin is certainly making a lot of money with the new things they have been coming out with like the new toys especially.

Though, it would be interesting if Club Penguin would place their own types of ads on the side of the gameplay screen. Like they would say something like stop by the Club Penguin shop or something like that.

They are actually all ready advertising 'made with real puffle o's' Seriously there is
no point in advertising because most of the kids are 6-8 who play it.

how would it know whether or not your a member? cp would have to make members only servers, and i dont really like the idea of that

*Gets his notebook and writes: Every time when CP members in MCCP are talking for money or remember the old CP they blame always Disney for the change.*

We don't care, but parents do. Having ADs would be a fiscal detriment to Club Penguin as parents would probably stop having their kids go there.

I highly doubt them taking away membership, or even lowering the price for that matter. Club penguin has gone from a happy-friendly game to a huge corporate money grabber.

What makes you say that? I haven't noticed.

They are actually all ready advertising 'made with real puffle o's'

Its a parody.

I think if they have ads, it's going to be for Hannah Montana gear, sugary cereal, or political ads (make your parents vote for Obama and you get a free beta hat!). If they advertise things that parents can't possibly complain about, I would love it.

Some are going to complain about any kinds of ADs even those for Club Penguin Products. Some of them complain now because they suspect Club Penguin might be commercialized.

I don't mind ads if it will be free. Other sites have ads like neopets and poptropica. Poptropica and SecretBuilders.com are also free to join.

If Club Penguin was free to deck out my igloo that would be cool!

They could do that it depends on whats going on in the business but since the game is shooting for young children not bad ads could be displayed or the parents will attack Club Penguin Staff in the 'Contact Us' area and a judge parent will get the Club Penguin staff in court.
So hopefully they aren't stupid enough to add horrible ads.
This is how it will look;
