If you enjoy puzzle games which can get fast paced, get Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2. It comes with a map editor, which is actually pretty rare for console games.

I would stay away from the Pokemon games, though. I've seen some commercials and reviews of previous ones for the DS, and they don't look like a good value.

EDIT: And NEVER buy something because of it's title. Take Happy Feet, for example. I was about to say, "Heh, Happy Feet. I like penguins..." and buy it, but then I did a little more research, and it wasn't all that good, so refrain from doing that. Always do some research before buying a game.

Pick-up Metroid Prime Hunters if you like FPS. Even if you don't, consider getting it. It made me get into FPS. Metroid Prime Hunters love and greatness is in the multiplayer part, just playing battling with computers is fun. If you go Wi-Fi it's even better. MPH's single player is c-r-a-p; if you're going for that; don't buy it and buy metroid on gamecube or the upcoming one for Wii. Beware, MPH is quite hard.
