View Full Version : Pokémon... SHINY GOLD?!?!?!?!?!

Yes kiddies, Pokemon SHINY GOLD. IT EXISTS. IM PLAYING IT. ITS AWESOME.
Basically, it's just a largely altered Pokemon Fire Red ROM, and someone did a GameBoy Advance Remake of Pokemon Gold based off of the Fire Red game. The game is free to download, and I've uploaded it here:
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/04bfb6cf5f_16MB
You'll need an Emulator to play it, I recommend using VisualBoyAdvance:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=vba&filename=VisualBoyAdvance-1.7.2.zip&use_mirror=internap
(NOTE: Emulators, and this game are both perfectly legal, BUT, if you choose to illegally run any other games with this emulator, I have nothing to do with it.)
Open the emulator, then drag and drop the ROM file into VisualBoyAdvance, and enjoy your game. : )
Remember, this is a fan created game, so there will be some bugs in it.
Have fun with your returning memories of the 2nd Generation of Pokemon... in better graphics & new features! : D If you have any questions about it, I'll try to answer them, but I probably know just as much about the game as you do.
NOTE: Pokemon that usually evolve in a trade will evolve in a different way in this game, since you cannot trade with friends. Example, Kadabra will evolve at level 40 rather then having to be traded. Eevee will evolve into Espeon or Umbreon when given a Sun or Moon stone... etc.
NOTE: If you own a Mac, you can find a Mac compatibile emulator by search "GBA Emulator Mac" on Google. But, the save feature doesn't appear to work on a Mac.

It's only of the title screen too!
I'm currently at the first gym right now, and I haven't noticed any major glitches. Trainer's names tend to be messed up, but the creator had an excuse for that, which I forget now...
And, you have two rivals in this game, which I find interesting. Perhaps you have a double battle with them later in the game?! : O

I'm sorry but this isn't legal actually, http://www.nintendospy.com/corp/legal.jsp, that page explains it well.
If there is some sort of mis-understanding going on here, and I haven't read the page correctly please inform me. Some reason I felt I should say that.

It's legal. The game was created by someone else, they only used a pre-existing game as... a "foundation" if you put it that way. Once you're in the game, you see that everything has been redone from the game he used.

I think it still might be illegal as it's still a pirated game, but it's just altered.
I hope I don't cause controversy or some sort of other problem by questioning the legality of this ROM...

Trust me, this is legal. If you're worried about breaking the law, then don't download it unless you own a copy of Pokemon Fire Red, because if you have the game, you can have a ROM of that actual game and it'd be legal. But, still, this is legal. If it isn't, it's like saying someone making a Club Penguin fan game is breaking the law.
EDIT: Either way... RFS gave me permission to post it, so it must be allowed?!

Well even if you have the real game and you still have a rom or emulator its still illegal and if your caught with a rom and emulator you can do serious time. All emulators and roms are illegal and if you still do not think they are illegal take a look at this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_emulator. And tell us what you think after you read it.

From Wikipedia,
However, in the U.S. it has been illegal since 1983 for a user to create their own backups of video game ROMs onto other cartridges. This was decided in the court case of Atari v. JS&A. JS&A manufactured a "game backup" device that allowed users to dump their Atari ROMs onto a blank cartridge. JS&A argued that the archival rule allowed for this. The court disagreed, noting that ROM media was not subject to the same volatility as magnetic media (for which the law was created). Thus, not being so relatively vulnerable, ROMs were not applicable under section 17 USC 117(a)(2).
That has given me doubts about what you said. If we are not allowed to copy our own games onto our computers in the U.S. I don't think we can download copies of games other people have illegally copied either.
EDIT: Either way... RFS gave me permission to post it, so it must be allowed?!

I don't even know whats legal anymore. I do know Nintendo won't come a bust down your door and take you to prison, though.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:
Once you get cut, cut the tree beside your house and go behind it, walk to the left side of your house and press A while facing the side of your house. There will be a hidden Level 10 Pikachu here, which will join your party if you say "yes" and have an extra space in your party. Pretty neat-o, huh?

ROM files are legal backups of games if you own the original. For example, I own Super Mario World in physical form for the Super Nintendo. If I want to, I may own the ROM image of this game as a legal backup. Emulators are not illegal either, they are simply applications that can be used to play compatible files. Like guns, emulators are completely legal to have, what you DO with them is your own choice whether it be good or bad.
Editing an existing game's data (in ROM form) changes it from what it used to be, and yes Dom emailed me about this thread and I told him he could post it since it was a "new" creation. Do not continue this discussion any further please.

Well if you still have the game on the real system and have it on an emulator its still illegal due to copyright laws. This is taken from Nintendo of America .com.There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.
Note this was taken from Nintendo of America .com corporate information page.

STORYLINE SPOILER:
I beat lance (The champion) with only my Lapras left, it was at 17 HP and it was paralyzed. It was one heck of a battle... and I was like YES I DID IT! Then... YOUR RIVAL COMES UP AND FIGHTS YOU. It has a team of level 50 pokemon and my Lapras was level 35. I manage to use a full restore before his first pokemon could one hit me, then I took out HIS WHOLE TEAM... with just a Lapras. (I got really, REALLY lucky with confuse ray)
LAPRAS = AWESOME.
MORE SPOILERS:
I'm now at the boat to goto Kanto. It was all like the original gold game, I had to find the guy's daughter... blah blah... then two team rocket's get in my way on my way off the ship, and the boat sinks to the bottom of the ocean! I somehow got out of the boat (dunno how I did it, it just happened) and now I'm in some cave under water, and I dunno what to do... figuring it out.

Yes, I believe all of the third gen pokemon are available (except for Jirachi, which is available), but they are VERY hard to find. On every route/cave, there's usually one or two of the third gen pokemon lurking around, and it's very rare to see them. I've caught quite a few myself.

I think you're just paranoid. Like Dominati0n said, emulators are not illegal, and the game is a fan game based off of G/S Version, using graphics from FR/LG Versions.
It is true that making rom files from your owned gamed invalidates the warrenty, and that it is pirating to distribute the rom files throughout the web, but this is a fan game, so it does not apply to Nintendo's Terms of agreement.

ROMS are illegal only if you don't have the game yourself, like RFS said. And the creator stopped doing the game anyway. It's like with World of Warcraft private servers, Blizzard can't do anything about it.

They can't arrest the person who made the game, or the group of people that made the emulator. The only way I see Zel (Creator of game) getting arrested is if he made a bunch of counterfeit games, and was making money off of them, which he's not. He's not taking money away from Nintendo, either. The way I see it is that when people play this, they'll wanna go buy a real Nintendo pokemon game, which is what happened to me.
Now seriously, stop ruining this thread. If you don't wanna play the game, that's fine, just leave. Others want to.

Thats what i ment about they can arrest the maker of rom and emulator. The only way that he could get arrested is if he did what you posted. Why not buy the real game insted of downloading an illegal emulator and rom i mean the game wouldent cost that much and neither would the gameboy.

Uhm, because you CAN'T buy this game. It's a fan made game that is only available online.

RFS, you're making a very common mistake. It is not legal to download a ROM from the internet, as stated in a link earlier in the thread.

This game is pirated. And have you ever heard of ebay? You can find the game on ebay insted of downloading an illegal emulator and rom.

You can't get this game on Ebay. IT IS A ROM HACK. IT IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET. IF PEOPLE ARE SELLING IT FOR MONEY, THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW.

The game looks cool, i might try it.
And about the legal thing, does anybody listen to RFS anymore?
Editing an existing game's data (in ROM form) changes it from what it used to be, and yes Dom emailed me about this thread and I told him he could post it since it was a "new" creation. Do not continue this discussion any further please.
I'm pretty sure He meant do not continue the discussion on whether its legal anymore.

Theres a bunch of pages is there so you got a good chance to find it on there. Why not buy the real game insted of downloading it illegally it aint that hard to find a game and system for a good price.

That's a different game. : l
SHINY Gold is a remake of Gold, similar to how Fire Red is a remake of Red.

I haven't had a go yet, so i'm not really continuing the little piracy issue, just my first dig. And i'm bored, if that's of any use.
Conker. The Webpage you're showing is of "Pokémon Gold". For the gameboy Colour, not the gameboy advance, which is, pokemon SHINY gold.
Pokemon Shiny Gold has used basic elements from firered/leafgreen and has been made into an entirely NEW game by Zel, the hacker. And this game he distributes for free. The only people who are doing ANYthing illegal are the ones selling this game. so if you see someone buying "SHINY gold" then it's illegal. It's made by a fan, Nintendo does not sell it, so it's not an illegal copy of anything. It's a Creation. Not a Copy. A creation. It is not sold, it is freely distributed and Nintendo could not care less but to rake in more money with all the publicity. Please, tell me we've finally made some sense to you???
Oh btw, how far down the game has it been completed, as compared to the original gold version? I've just started out with it. I really hope Nintendo does remake gold somebody..it's the best by far..

I had gotten to Kanto, and got a few badges. I tried going to the power plant, but a ghost always stops you on the way, and you can't hit it. I think that's Zel's way of saying you can't get that far yet. I think you can get the poke flute station somewhere to get to Fuschia City, but I couldn't find it.
