Pete had been hiding in the old Chinatown. After the crisis, all the Chinese citizens had to leave, and the new administration didn't want to bother doing anything with it, so it had become sort of a hideout for the rebelling "false-bloods". He decided it was time for the food-run, so he left Chinatown and headed to the local KFC, where he would raid the excess barrel.
He noticed something different about the parking lot when he got there. According to the car catalogs he had been reading to pass time, there was a 1966 Buick Century there. "Odd", he said under his breath. "No one drives 60's cars anymore."
"What was that, Jim?"
"I didn't say anything."
The police had heard him. He dove into the car, hoping it would be safe. There was a note on the dashboard. He grabbed it, thinking it would be a dead giveaway if the police saw it. Then, he started to read:
Hello, Joanna. As promised, this is the clue. However, I will first tell you that the car is yours. I believe I have left the keys in the glove compartment, as well as a map. Use this map to lead you to the next clue. Sincerely, Joshua Loandes.
Pete searched the glove compartment, and found a key, and a map, as the note said, as well as some food. He looked out the window, seeing that the police had gone to the other side of the building, and started to drive back to Chinatown.
Along the way, he stopped to give some food to Joanna, Mike, and Alys, and asked their names. When Joanna told him her name, he said "I believe this is your car. My name is Pete Cartier. I'm the son of a French trader and his Russian wife."
