What does 'backseating moderators' mean? I've seen people saying some people were banned for this reason, Also how long does a thread need to have not been posted in long enough if someone else posts in it, it becomes a bump? Read the title, I'm not a newb or anything, I just don't know.:P

A] Backseating a Mod: Well, when you telll a mod what to do, e.g. "THIS IS SPAM!!11 CLOSE THIS THREAD MODS!!11" That would be consdiered "backseating" I currently have an infraction for that
B] How long must a thread be in active for it to be bumped: There is no actual rule for how long it must be in active. Mosty over two months to one year.

Thier both correct in simple backseat moderating is a normal user trying to be a moderator. Also for bumping I believe it's once after 24 hours have passed.

Wouldn't it be a bit longer than that?
I think a bump is either after it has passed through 1 or 2 pages of threads, or a couple weeks. It also depends on what the post contributes to the thread too.

A backseat moderator is someone who likes to imagine themselves as a mod when they aren't. The thing with these guys is that they don't do it just once, they keep doing it even after a REAL mod warns them to stop. Suggesting that someone should post for help in "CP Help & Support" or "Computer Corral" is NOT backseat moderating. Explaining to someone how to use an avatar or a signature is NOT backseat moderating.
Here are some common examples of backseat moderating:
- "This has been posted X amount of times mods lock this please :lock:"
- "You can't say 'this this and this' on the forums mods ban this guy :ban:"
- "This is a great thread/guide mods sticky this please "
As you can see, most of the time these phrases end with the user TELLING the moderators how to do their job. Sorry, they aren't the boss, I am. If we think action should be taken, we will do it ourselves. Instead of getting on a "IM A MOD HURF DURF" high horse, we urge people to report posts instead, this works better for everyone.
And speaking of "bumping", that depends on how active that part of the forum is. In Anime Channel, there are threads on Page 2 from like January, but posting in them really isn't bumping since they are still pretty new. Generally if the thread is five pages back or more then posting in it is usually called a "bump". Bumping is fine as long as you have something decent to say about the topic.

You have not read the rules.
Don't tell me you have, because your question is proof that you haven't.

That's a lot to whomever told him it was a post rank.
Now you have one more user oblivious to the forum rules running around. I hope you're all happy.

This is probably an obvious question but if I say "Requested to be Locked", is that Backseat Modding?

No, if you created the thread.
But if you walk into another thread and go:
mods dis is spam lock :lock:
than that is backseat modding.

Actually if you are the OP and you want your thread locked you can report your own post and just tell the mods to lock it. That works, and you don't get infractions or anything for reporting yourself.

This is probably an obvious question but if I say "Requested to be Locked", is that Backseat Modding?
If it is your thread that you requested to be locked, it isn't. You just report the first post of your thread and request it to be locked, or write a post upon request. A Moderator will simply comment back with, "Locked upon request of Author". If you made some sort of Club or Shop and you want it re-opened, just report the first post of the thread stating you want it unlocked.
If it's not your thread and you say that, it is Backseat Moderating. The Moderators are already aware of how to complete their job, they don't need someone to remind them that it was requested to be locked.
Example: "Mods :lock: this!!!"
If you see a thread that should be locked, just report the thread and a Moderator will see it. I'm not saying that they will agree with you, but they will look at the situation. Saying something should be locked directly on the thread is not your call to make, only a Moderators.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
