Lots of people have always wondered: How do I take a picture of my penguin? Well, here’s how to do it:
1. Screenshots/Screen Captures
What is a screenshot/screen capture? Well some people call them a “screeny” or “screenie” and it’s basically taking a picture of your screen using only your computer.
Windows: CTRL + PRNT SCRN
Mac: Command-Shift-3
Linux: Coming soon
2. Editing and cropping your picture

How do you upload a picture? Well, first, you need to go to an image uploading website. Here are three sites.
www.imageshack.us
www.photobucket.com
www.tinypic.com
If you were to upload a picture on Imageshack, here’s how you would do it (courtesy of MagicPuffs—creator of the pic):

-=C=-
If you go to your Profile and click “Edit Avatar”, at the bottom of the page you will see this:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k104/balthasar987/customavatar.jpg
Basically, all you do is click browse and a new window will pop up. From there, just click your picture and click “Open”. Then, click “Save Changes” to upload.
QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS? Please post if you have any.
*** IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG FORUM, PLEASE MOVE IT. I WAS INDECISIVE ABOUT THE APPROPRIATE FORUM SO I DECIDED TO POST IT HERE.

Yea, once you know the basics, it's real easy for you to understand. However, if you're new, then it may be difficult. I'm hoping it's easy and clear for people though.

Well, unfortunately, I failed to realize that RFS posted one of his own elswhere (Sorry, RFS). So, I'm just probably going to keep the link in my signature for now since I don't think it will be stickied. Anyway, thanks for your input. :p

On Mac, Cmd+Shift+3 is a full screenshot saved to desktop. Cmd+Shift+Ctrl+3 is full screenshot saved to clipboard (for easy pasting). Cmd+Shift+4 allows you to take a picture of only part of your screen (press Esc at any time to cancel) and Cmd+Shift+Ctrl+4 is a section of screen saved to the clipboard.

You probably saved the file as a bitmap file (BMP). You have to save it either as PNG, JPG, or GIF in order for it to be valid.

That's probably because you saved it as a bitmap file (BMP). Try saving it as a JPG, GIF, or PNG file instead. Also, make sure that the demensions are no larger than 150 x 150 pixels and that the file size does not exceed 20 KB (kilobytes).

Yea, when you do Ctrl Prnt Scrn, you don't know if it took the picture. The best thing you can do is guess. After you take the picture, just click "Paste" or press Ctrl + V when you go on MS Paint.

I just Wanted To Say That For Mac if you do Shift + Apple (Command) + 4, You Can Crop The Picture Instead of doing the same thing with 3. If you do it with 4, a cross comes up. Crop the picture without a program. But then you have to save the picture in your picture editing program.

Nice Batlhy, and I want to point at something I hate when people (WAIT ITS NOT FOR BALTHY I AM SAYING THAT FOR OTHERS!) do things as I do, when I first added the credit in the signature when you place your mouse it appears a ton did like me, also when my old shop was created a ton of people did somethings like me, also even my avatar when I change it Micheal tries his best to make one like me, well I don't care no because I can make some better things than what I could in the past.

balthasar i try to set my penguin and it says invalid file even though i used the link by imageshack. oh ya and do u need a program to edit?if u do can u tell me one (fir free) if there is one
I don't know what kind of computer you have, so I just listed a few editing programs.
A Few Editing Programs:
MS Paint
GIMP
Barbarossa
PhotoShop CS2
Maybe your file size is too big (any more than 20.0 KB is invalid), the pixel size is too large (you can't have an avatar bigger than 150 x 150 pixels), or you saved it as a file that the forums do not handle (try saving it as a GIF, JPG, or PNG).

I believe that screen captures (screenies) are always enabled on your computer. Honestly, there is no way of knowing if you took a screenie unless you open up a new MS Paint file (Apple paint editor works too) or Microsoft Word document (Apple Word Processor works too) and click "PASTE" or CTRL + V.
ummm for some reason my computer won't do that. i have a windows XP and i do ctrl+Print Screen/sysrq and nothing happens! plz help!
You don't know if you have taken a screenie. The only thing you can do is click "PASTE" or CTRL + V when you open up Microsoft Word or MS Paint (or the Apple Word Processor or Apple paint editor).
It says remote file is to large what that mean?
That means that the pixel size is too large. Your avatar can only be 150 X 150 pixels.

Take for example you find a picture off of google. You then copy the image link onto the forums and add image tags around both sides of the link. Just copy the code like so...

thats not how you do it on a macintosh. the way you do it on a macintosh is you go to the application PREVEIW and then you go to file and then go all the way down to grab and you have three different ways to take a screenshot, from a timed screen, to a quick capture, and last you pick the size of the screen shot you want to take.
