Prolouge
The sound of metal against metal chorused throughout the valley. The sound of the dead ebbed in and out of Ruvian’s head. He winced as a crossbow bolt found its mark in the back of the youth’s knee. Ruvian crumpled to the floor and pulled his shield over his head as if it might protect him. The clang of metal stopped. The cries of terror and the barbarians who thirsted for blood stopped their chanting. The world fell still and at that moment; he then found he was lying in a pool of blood. The sharp edge of an axe embedded itself in his side.
He lifted the shield and he saw that the scene of carnage raged on but no sounds were to be heard. Men died beside him, but he could not hear the cacophony of their dying pleas. And at the end of those few minutes, the sound came back. A soft whisper at first, but it twisted and molded itself into a harmony louder than thunder. But this time, as the noise became greater, his sight became weaker, until everything went dark.
