(In)Justice
The sky was overcast as the two lovers strolled down the street, hand in hand with smiles printed upon their fair faces. “Do you mind if I take a look in that bookstore?” Miranda said, pointing at the store with red awning they had just passed. “It’ll only be a minute, I promise.” Karen smiled. “Of course – besides, I have something I need to go do real quick. I’ll meet you in front of that water fountain over there.” She pointed to the fountain that was on display right on the edge of the block in front of a thrift store, the water rising and falling, almost as if breathing. They kissed gently and then let their hands fall away from one another as they began walking in opposite directions.
Miranda entered the bookstore, which turned out to absolutely lovely on the inside. The red carpeting matched the awning perfectly, the books were resting upon the shelves neatly, and the staff smiled up at her from the counter as she entered. After telling them she was only looking, she stole away into one of the aisles and began eyeing all of the books with an optimistic expression. There were few things she loved more than to look through all the books, sometimes finding a treasure for a cheap price.
She ended up buying two books by authors who she thought looked quite interesting and then stepped back out into the shadows of the overcast sky. Looking towards the fountain, Miranda saw Karen waiting patiently with her hands behind her back, looking at all the people who passed her. She quickened her pace into a slight jog, and soon she was eye to eye with the woman whom she loved so dearly. Karen smiled, asking her if she’d found any good books. Miranda nodded, raising the plastic bag that she held in her right hand. “And what were you off doing, being all sneaky?” Karen brought her hands out from behind her back, revealing a bouquet of red roses which she held dearly as she handed it to her lover. “Oh… you know, just out fooling around.” They kissed gently, smiling. “I love you.” “I love you too.”
A man stepped out from the alleyway behind them, a crude sneer painted across his face. A shot rang out, and Karen fell down to the ground, clutching her chest as the man’s voice echoed within her failing ears. “That’s f---ing justice right there, you f---ing queers!” The roses fell from Miranda’s hands and into the crimson life that was already running down the cracks and crevices of the concrete as she began screaming…
Love is the substance that keeps us sane. When that substance is taken, is stolen away from you, hopelessness is all the emotion left. Karen Gaunt had been the sanity of Miranda Prescott, but now… that sanity was gone. Miranda stood in the middle of the darkened alleyway where her life had been taken away, where Karen lay among puddles of her own blood. She stood in the alleyway where “justice” had taken place, and where bloodstained roses would echo within her thoughts as she looked blankly down a loaded gun. Miranda stood where injustice had stolen her world.
