I'm sure by now you're all extremely sick of all my MCR shat by now if you even take the time to read it - but I wrote this for another forum and decided that perhaps you all would enjoy it as well. :]
Valentine's Day
The shop was full of wondrous candies and balloons of all sizes, enlightening the six year old who was roaming around inside with his father to no end. “Daddy look at that!” he would cry, pointing out the bells and whistles of the official lover’s holiday. Michael Way and his son Charles were inside Lisa’s Flowers & Gifts, trying to find the perfect present for Alicia Way, Michael’s amazing wife. And much to Mikey’s amusement, Charles insisted on helping. “How about this one?” Mikey pointed to a pink tipped white rose that was on display on the counter.
Charles shook his head, frowning slightly. “No, I don’t think she would like that one. She told me she liked red best – she said red was her favorite color.” Mikey chuckled. “Oh, alright then… you’re the valentine boss…” Charles smiled radiantly, obviously pleased with his newly named position. Michael walked along the counter a little ways before spying a pure red rose, and then pointed to it and looked hopefully at his son. “That one?” Charles paused, observing it thoroughly before nodding and smiling.
“Yea she’d love that one all right… it’s perfect.” Mikey smiled down on his son and patted his head gently – Charles then shook his head around vigorously, and then returned the smile. “Well, I suppose if it’s perfect we’ll just have to get her some of those then, huh?” Mikey cleared his throat and the woman behind the counter who had been looking through a magazine looked up, obviously quite hopeful that they would buy something. “Can I help you?” Her red lipstick and black cropped hair looked quite over done to Mikey – but he said nothing on the subject as he asked politely for a bouquet of red roses.
Charles grabbed the sleeve of Mikey’s jacket as he pulled his wallet out to pay for the roses and yanked until his father looked down at him, and then at the object on the wall he was pointing to. “Daddy can I have one of those? Please? I helped really good today and I even told you what Mommy wanted for Valentine’s Day.” His father smiled and shrugged. “I guess I’ll also have one of those balloons up there, number 13 please. Oh, and a small bag of Hershey’s Kisses as well.”
The woman smiled and asked for the two of them to wait just a moment as she aired the balloon up and gathered their things together. Once Mikey had paid and the balloon that read, “Be My Valentine!” was safely tied around Charles’ wrist, they strode out of the store smiling, listening to the tinkling of the overhead doorbell as they exited.
“Where are we going now daddy?” Charles asked.
“Well, we have to go give Mommy her roses and then I suppose we can invite Uncle Gerard and Aunt LynZ over for dinner. How’s that sound?”
“As long as we hide the chocolate first, cuz Uncle Gerard might eat it all.”
Mikey laughed as they strode down the sidewalk. “Well… how about we give him one piece? How’s that?”
Charles considered this for a moment and then with a great amount of effort, nodded. The two of them walked in silence for a few minutes – at least, until Charles rounded up another question or two.
“Are we there yet?” He asked impatiently.
“Almost, I promise. Only a little farther.”
---
Once they arrived at their destination, all was quiet. Their footsteps rang in Mikey’s ears as they walked, and the birds chirping in the nearby trees watched from their perches. “Mommy!” Charles looked radiantly happy and ran across the grass with great anticipation, a toothy smile taking up most of his face. “Mommy we got you Valentine’s roses!” He ran across the cemetery until he reached the marker that read, “Alicia Way | 1984 – 2008” and then knelt down on his knees and wrapped his arms around the tombstone, hugging it gently.
Mikey stood above his son as he hugged what he would grow to remember of his mother with a smile upon his face. “Daddy is Mommy going to stop talking to God soon? I want to hug her for real. I’ll even give her a piece of my cake on my birthday if she comes back.”
Charles looked happy enough as he said this – but Michael’s eyes were swimming with tears. “No, I… I think that she’s going to be talking to God for a long time… you know, she… had to go talk to God while you were being born because he didn’t think you were ready yet – but she knew you were ready, and she loved you and wanted to see you. She’s still talking to him and convincing him that you belong here, with us. It might take a long time, Charles.”
“Oh…” Charles paused before speaking again. “She knows that I love her right? Cuz she really does need to know that. ‘Specially on Valentine’s Day.” Michael smiled slightly, trying his best not to cry in front of his son. “Yes. She knows that you love her very much.”
He knelt down next to Charles, who had stopped hugging the marker and began playing with his balloon, and looked down at the roses in his arms. Mikey laid them carefully against the front of the tombstone, still smiling as a single tear leaked from his right eye and ran down his cheek.
“I love you. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
