Until Eternity Ends
By Lindsey
The concept of something we, as human beings, cannot understand… the chilling truth that in this world there IS such a thing that we still do not comprehend…the fear that overcomes us as we all realize that death is unknown, and in that respect, we cannot help but fear it…
The notebook that Scott held in front of him was full of small notes such as these, notes that continued entering his mind as everything he knew collapsed around him effortlessly, as if it meant nothing. The page that it was now turned to in his lap consisted of nothing but the void of death, the unknown that lay ahead – tears fell here and there, dampening the paper. Please God, let her be alright… let them both be alright…
The hospital waiting room in which he sat was all but empty – Scott sat in his own small corner of the tiled room, glancing at every odd opportunity at the old man that sat reading last week’s Sunday paper on the opposite side of the room. Outside, shadows had enveloped everything, in the way that was natural of the night. The hum of a soda machine came from only a few yards from where Scott sat, but he would giving it no business tonight – tonight was much too important, tonight was much too stressful, and he feared that even the simple task of standing up and finding change in his jeans pocket for a Diet Coke would send him over the edge. The last thing he wanted was to start screaming in front of the old man reading his newspaper.
If only they’d kept me in the dark… I’m beginning to wish that they hadn’t told me… Scott was no doubt going to lose his mind if news from the nurse or doctor didn’t reach him soon – the notebook only kept him occupied when his mind came up with little notes or thoughts he thought worth writing down, and he was growing painfully short on those things. All the same, however, he began to move the dull pencil across the tear-stained paper once again, writing down anything he could think of to keep himself sane.
Love can only be measured by the tears we shed for it…if that’s the case, I’m afraid I’ll soon drown myself in them…what if everything works out in the end, but she still doesn’t like me? What if I’m going to be an absolute wreck at this? Jesus, just don’t let Lauren die… oh my god…
Without really noticing, he had begun writing down things that he normally wouldn’t have – for really, they weren’t as intelligent sounding as his other things. But as long as it just kept him writing… just kept him thinking… just kept him from screaming…
“Mr. Adams?” Scott’s head shot up, looking at the nurse with great fear. “Y-yes?” The nurse smiled down on him, and as she did so, the man’s heart sped up until he could feel its throbbing tone in his throat. “Your wife is fine, and so is the baby. It’s a girl – congratulations.” Scott leaped from his seat, the notebook spilling from his lap onto the floor, and without really meaning to he ran across the room and straight to the nurse, embracing her as tears ran down his face.
The nurse was quite used to this sort of reaction; especially when a complication was fixed without any major trouble. She hugged him back, asking him if he would like to see his wife and child as he pulled away. He nodded, unable to speak, and she led the way down the hall. As his footsteps echoed on the tile floor, Scott couldn’t help but think of the things he’d put in the notebook while waiting those long hours.
I don’t know what you’ll think of me as you grow, as you see my faults and my mistakes;
but I’ll love you until eternity ends.
