Its like you telling someone that he breakes the rules.(i think)
To prevent backseat modding, use the report bottun.

Backseat modding is when someone is posting in a spam thread or something, and telling the user that its spam, and that they should do this, and read this, etc. So its like someone posting in a thread as if they are a mod.
But like powdinet said, just report the user's post, dont backseat moderate.

That's considered "backseat moderating". I think it's helping the moderators. Plus, the users should be allowed the privledge of helping here; you can't tell someone to stop spamming without it being backseat moderating? Users like that are just trying to the make the forum safe, just like you guys. I beileve you used strong words "posting as if they are a mod"Not really, they're helping you.Every forum I go to moderators are complaining how hard of a job it is, when really it isn't. Your not expected to be in everyday, most of the time users are sucking up to you. All you really do is sit behind of a computer & modify someonelse's post/thread to get rid of violence & inappropriate behaviour, which hardly ever happens. We're not trying to be you, people who "backseat moderate" are trying to help as misguided as they are. Then again as soon as I'm done editing my post I will bashed apart by mob of users who are defending you.

I think its more helpful to mos to see a report in theyre little hidden forum then going on every single thread trying to find spam.

Backseat moderating is when another user pretends he or she is a moderator and tells someone else what to do and what not to do. Reporting a user to a moderator is telling the moderator to deal directly with the user. That means that you do not directly confront the one who you reported like you would do if you were backseat moderating. There's the difference.
While you may think that backseat moderating is great, it really isn't. More often than not, backseat moderating leads to flame wars and makes problems worse than they are. I do not consider the commencement of flame wars and worsening of problems as anywhere near "helpful". It only makes our job harder.
Also, if you think that inappropriate behavior hardly ever happens, you obviously have not been here long enough. As moderators, we can view reported posts, which allows us to basically see everything that is happening at once. I can guarantee you that there are at least 3-5 reported posts a day.

Yeah users should help, but by using the :mod: button. When a post gets reported, it shows us the exact post. It helps keep the forums in place.

Back seat modding is refering to acting like you are the mod, otherknown as, doing stuff like"this thread should be locked". The mods do not like when this happens because for one, the mods have become mods because they know what they are doing, and know when to and when not to lock threads. It's kind of like you asking for an avatar, and I give the render, the BG colour the text colour, all the information out.
Unless the mod's ask(which is highly doubtful) for you to back seat mod, don't.

"this thread should be locked".
Yes, this is a perfect example of a backseat mod quote. It is not your call as to whether or not a thread should be locked or a post be deleted.
If someone is new and doesn't seem to quite understand the forums, then explaining what they are doing wrong and linking them to a thread or post that can help them is ok. Quoting people and flat out saying "this is spam spam spam" or "this thread needs to be closed" or other things like that aren't helping anybody.

Correct me if I'm wrong, you just did.
Anyways, so yeah, it's basically acting like a mod when you really aren't. That's the short answer, then long answer... well just read all the long posts in this thread.;)
Lock it!
One quarter of that was backseat-moderating.
The part that I left in the qoute is back seating. Saying a duplicate thread is ok for anyoneone to say, because all you have to do is just link that author to the pre-thread. Saying,"lock it!" is the backseat moderating. Mods know what they are doing.

Back Seat Modding is kind of like nagging. Its annoying too.
"Close this thread"
"Your not allowed to swear"
Thats just like nagging, telling other people what to do. Since nagging is annoying, its not allowed on the forums.

The point the mods are trying to make it that when you act like a moderator in a thread, it just adds to the spam. Our biggest spam threads consist of "this is spam, a mod should lock it.", "your an immature jerk, CAN A MOD PLEASE COME AND LOCK THIS." This is just making more spam.
Lily, relax, they were just answering the quest, except iscic, who deserved that. :D

I think you need to take some time off the computer, relax, and gather your thoughts. Will my head be torn off for an effort to assist you too? We are not attempting to get on your back, all we are tryign to do is help.

Blah , blah blah. I'm not going to lectured by some 15 year old.
How about a 21 year old, I like to lecture.
Sorry RFS I just had to :P
On topic, back in the day I was almost the same way, I would always try to 'help' yet would constantly get fussed at. Back then was A LOT worse then it is now and I felt that if I didn't do what little I could than the mods would explode. So when I finally lost it I basically said to myself "OK, it isn't MY problem it is THEIR problem and I will let them deal with it." So from then on I just reported anything and everything that I would have normally tried to 'help'. So now I want you to understand that when someone breaks the rules just report it and us highly trained mods will deal with whatever is going on. Maybe if you have enough quality reports and become a friendly part of the community you may be bestowed with the power to help.
Does that make sense? See I'm a good lecturer.
Lily you can just respond on my newest mod blog since this is locked and opening it will not help anything:P
