Okay so maybe you need a book to read, but you do not know what to read next. Or maybe you have just read a good book and would like to share it. If either applies to you, this is the thread for you. Below are some books that we would like to share. I have started the list, but if you have anything that you want to add, please create a summary and post it below. I will then post it on this post. Joey Peng's are in Dark Green. Reviews made by me are in black. Reviews made by people who have done less than three reviews are in purple, and their name is after the review. I would love your imput because there are so many great books out there that I can not remember all of the great ones that I have read. Thanks and good luck!
Series
~ The Bartimeous triligy- this series is very well written. the characters are well devoloped so much that you feel as if you know them. In this series a 'spirit' named Bartimeous is summoned by a boy named Nathanial. They end up becomming friends and together, they save the day.
- The Bartimeous trilogy: The plot line was boring at times, but what kept these books interesting was the moral conflicts. All the time, the main character, Nathaniel, was teetering on the edge of being a good guy, and being a bad guy. When the final battle happens, you are not sure who to root for as you need to think about who is fighting for what. The conflict of how magical beings should be treated is present everywhere in the book. By Joey Peng
~ The Septimus Heap series By Angie Sage- This triligy is great. Just when you think that you have everything figured out, another curve is thrown your way. The first two books are Magyk and Flyte, and the third and final one, Physik, will be released in 19 days. This series is about a family of seven children. On the youngest one's birthday, she finds out that she is not who she thinks that she is, and people want her killed. The head wizard helps her escape to the forest where she finds her real destiny.
~ The Underland Chronicals By Suzanne Collins- Even though it was written towards the middle school range, this is a great read for anybody. Action packed, you can relate to what the characters are feeling. After Gregor falls through a grate in his laundry room and meets cockroaches that are six feet tall, he realizes that he is in an entirely new world. Throughout this series, Gregor helps out the people who live underground with these insects. He is destined to help because of proficies that were written by the underground's founder.
~The Young Wizard Series- One day, a girl discovers a book. This book turns out to be a handbook for wizards. With this book, she finds friends who help her save the world, and the universe.
~Shadow Children Series By Margret Peterson Haddix-Imagine a world in the future where there are so many people that the government has to regulate the amount of children that you can have and the amount of food that you get. That is Luke's world, and he is an illigal third child. This series follows his struggle to get free and to help the other children who are illigal to lead normal lives. Recomended by XxblubberxX
-Shadow Children Series: A disturbing , well written, intriguing set of novels about "third children", children who by law are not allowed to be born because of a population problem. Much like the situation in China, these books make me appreciate everything I value and take for granted. By Joey Peng
~A Series of Unfortunant Events Lemony Sniket-If you want to read a happy book, do not read this. I was disappointed with this series. Sure, if you want to improve your vocabulary, this is a great read. But I thought that it got dull at some points. I ended up skimming over parts of it because I wanted to get on with the story. It has a great story line, but I just do not like Lemony Snicket's way of writing. Also, I thought that it was wierd how the last book of the series, The End, ended with a cliffhanger. Oh well, I guess that was the last impression that he wanted given. I just always enjoy it when books spell out what happened afterwards.
- A Series of Unfortunant Events: Brilliantly written by a master story teller, his dark humor and hints and unique, direct approaches at the audience totally redefine how a book should be written. Funny, sad, and deep. These series also have many secrets hidden in them, things you would not notice unless you looked in the right places. By Joey Peng
~The City of Ember, The People of Sparks, and The Prophet of Yonwood- The people in this series lived underground, but they did not know that an aboveground exists. It turns out that a society was built underground when a new world war erupted. This is a layed back story, with not much action, but it has a good storyline.
~Children Of the Red King By Jenny Nimmo- Charlie Bone knows that he is different. But he had know idea that his world would turn upside down when he discovers a new talent. Follow Charlie through his quest to conquer the evil Manfred Bloor, the Yewbeams, and everyone else who wants to harm him.
~Harry Potter By J.K. Rowling- I had been debating weather or not to add Harry Potter to this list. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, so it is not like it does not deserve to be here. I just think that with all of the publicity that Harry Potter gets, everybody has heard about it. By now, most people who would want to read this series already would have. If you disagree with me, just say so and I will change this and put in an actual review.
-Btw- if you have ever started the first harry potter book and not finished it because it was too boring, please give the rest of the series a shot. These books are really good.
~Pendragon- I just realized that I have forgetton pendragon. HOw could I??? This is one of my favorite series. It is about a boy who travels to different worlds to help each in turn to avoid distruction.
~The Land of Elyon- In this series a girl is trying to save her world witch she notices to be getting worse and worse after finding a "jocasta" and talks to animals. She learns about ogres which are under the power of a giant god who she is trying to stop. They used to be giants but then the "black swarm" got to them and injected the "ogre poison" into them. There are three books in this series and I have read them all.Review by Libertyhill
- I have read this series as well. It is great if you love fantasy. This book makes you realize how many freedoms that you have after having to read about the people in these books living behind walls their whole lives. I would highly suggest reading this series.
Books
~Spellfall- When Natalie discovers a candy wrapper on the ground at the supermarket one day, she does not realize that her world is about to be turned upside down. She discovers the secret about where her mother came from and her mysterious death.
~Tangerine- I remember I enjoyed reading this book, but I do not remember all of the details. I know that a boy is trying to fit in in a new town, but that is about all that I remember. :)
~Bridge To Teribithia-It should only be read by kids mature enough for it, because it talks about adult matters that are too depressing and worrysome for younger children. The movie does a good job of portraying these issues, but almost nothing compares to how deep this book goes. Overall, a very good book that every person should read at least once in their life, when they are mature enough for it! Thanks to Wolfbark for this addition.. I agree with Wolfbark. This is a great book with a lot of life lessons.
~Summerland- This is a great book. I love it every time that I read it. Summerland is about a boy who is needed to help stop the world from collasping. Throughout the book, Ethan has to play many baseball games. Though these games, he learns a lot about himself and his friends.
~Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil By John Berendrt-This book takes place in the city of Savannah, Geoirga and is about an antique dealer who is convicted of murdering his carpanter. He goes through four suspenseful trials and contains a suprise ending. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has visited the city of Savannah or looking for a good read. Also this book contains an extreme amount of pervasive R rated language and a lot of talk about prostitutes, etc. Suggested by KingKitty.
~The Thief and the Beanstalk-Nick is a young thief scavenging for a life, his parents were killed by a plague and he was left alone... Jack is now an old man living in a castle bought with stolen gold from the giant. He is sad, so only paints his memories. While Nick is looking for food in an abandoned farm, he is approached by a well dressed, strong, and bulky man with a large jagged knife. He is asked to join a group of thieves trying to steal Jack's gold. They say they will give him food so he of course says yes. While getting into Jack's castle Jack finds him and gives him the beanstalk beans. He doesn't know what he's getting into, there are still giants, but more vicious with other even more vicious animals. There is a lot of action and adventure in this exciting book. Five Star *****Review by Libertyhill
Authors
~Eoin Colfer- Eoin Colfer writes a lot of science fiction. Some of his works include the Artimis Fowl Series, The Supernaturalist, and The Wish List. These books defy the laws of the universe, as do most science fiction novels. They are targeted to teens, and are humorous.
~Jerry Spenelli- Some of his works include Wringer, Stargirl, Maniac Magee, Loser, and Milkweed. Most of his books keep your intrest, but they make you think of things differently when you are done reading them.
Please Suggest any books that you have enjoyed and think that others will too.
