you can download game maker lite on yoyogames.com (http://yoyogames.com) but if you want to do more you have to buy "Pro" for $20, but you only have to pay it once, not monthly.

put a code with the following:
show_message("what you want it to say");

if you want it to display the value of a variable:
show_message(variable name);
