Need help with The Gimp? Tell me, and I'll do my best to help with your problem. Instead of wasting my day and typing out everything people get confused with, I thought I'd just let you guys ask me yourselves. I may not know everything, and I'm sorry if I can't, but Jimmy will end up coming here and helping you. =) Please do your best to describe your problem, so I will understand it better and fix it with the first post, instead of making three pages about it.

Happy Posting!

Well, that depends on what you want to look better. Post some examples and explain a little more.

Well, I did have this one question... How do you make your text grow by one pixel? Everytime I click the "grow" option, the text never grows. Any suggestions?

After your text is where you want it, use the text tool and double click the text, then click the size up button. I'm actually not quite sure I understand. Never heard of the grow button before, this is the closest I could get.

You can select your text layer (assuming it hasn't been merged; you will have to undo merge) and make sure the Text tool is selected. Then, in the Tool Options, you can set how big the text is.

No. I cannot tell you how to use Gimp. It is very confusing. Try some tutorials on GimpTalk to get you started and develop you own style.

Two questions.

How do you make your penguin see trough.Like cains?

1. If you're talking about renders you get from a site, just click them and get them open to the biggest view the render site will allow you, and then RIGHT CLICK ON THEM AND CLICK SAVE PICTURE AS. After saving, open GIMP and open your render. Choose the SELECT BY COLOR TOOL and click on the checkerboard area. After that, press CTRL+I and then CTRL+C. Paste the render onto your background (CTRL+V) and you're good to go.

2. When you have a background to put the penguin on, press CTRL+L in GIMP to open your layers ''tab.'' Now, create a new layer for the penguin by hitting on the screen with the background, LAYER> NEW LAYER. Now, paste your penguin onto it and on the layers tab I mentioned earlier, drag the bar that says OPACITY down to somewhere below 100%. The lower you go, the more transparent the penguin will get.

Difference in Layers

It may want you to set the layer to Difference mode. To do this, push Ctrl+L to pull up your ''Layers screen,'' as I call it. =P

Click on the layer you wish to set to difference, and in the drop down menu that says Normal, click the arrow to bring down all your options, and choose difference.

Difference in Gradients

It also may want you to do difference in gradients. To do this, when on the gradients tool options, on the same drop down menu with Normal on it, click the arrow and select difference.

I'm pretty sure those are the 2 things it might be referring to. You can also set Brushes to difference the same way as the gradients. (I think. Not totally sure.)

Try one of those. Play with the settings as much as you like until you get what you want. Supernova is probably what you want, unless she made her own custom GFlare.

In your layers name, after the name, put a space and then (300ms)

Change the number to what you want, and that's how long it'll stay.

I don't think that your link works Balti(it could just be me, but you never know). Also, it is showing a red X under the link that you posted. either fix the link, or fix the picture.

New question: I need some help with layer masking. Its only worked a few times every time I use a gradient on the layer mask, but all the other times it just makes the image transparent. What do I do? The layer mask I use for it is "White(full opacity)". Thanks if you can help with this.

You can get gimp at http://gimp.org, or http://download.com. If you don't have GTK Runtime Environment, you will need that too, or GIMP will not work. You can find that on both of the links I posted in this post. Happy GIMPing;)

Ok i qustion can i animate with GIMP? And if so how do i do it?

22 March 2007, 01:15 AM
Yes, you can animate in GIMP. You need to work in layers, the layers will serve as the frames. To make sure that the image is not to shaky, go to Filters>Animation>Playback, and that will show you sort of what the animation will be like. Then after your done with the animation, save it as a .GIF and check the circle with "save as animation" and hit "Export", do not check interlace, gif coment is ok, check "loop forever", set the delay between the frames, and for the frame disposal, click the arrow, and select "one frame per layer(replace).

Hope that helps you with your animations in GIMP. My question still isn't answered... Owell.

That looks like a simple gradient to me. To most of my knowledge, just look for it in your gradients, or you can make one. If you can't find it, try switching around the foreground color that you have selected.

Eww, using C4Ds and stealing brush pics? HELL NO.

I made that background myself, and it has those lines on the right side because I smudged black into it with a grunge-ish brush.

I either used some sort of fractical brushes or MetalCX brushes for the background.NO C4DS. I've never used an abstract render in a sig.

I save all my edits as JPG on GIMP. It won't let me save it into 'My Pictures' when I save it as JPG, only 'My Documents and Settings.' Can you tell me how to save it differently, or at least tell me what is wrong?

http://deviantart.com (Search GIMP Brushes)

To get them into GIMP, open the brush pack folder and double click the brush you want to open it. Once the brush image is open in GIMP, click Script Fu>Selection>To Brush

Name the brush what you want and click Ok and you're done. This is the easiest, but not the only way...The other way includes going to GIMP's Program Files folder and manually putting the brush into it. The Script Fu is just easier. =P

There isn't a rain button. If I remember right, what I did was:

Duplicate the layer of the image you're adding rain to about 4 times.
Add a transparent layer above each of the duplicated layers you just made.
After that, add noise (Filters>Noise>Scatter RGB)
Make your alpha slider go up to around 50, and uncheck Independent RGB. Set your red, blue, and green sliders up to increase how much noise is added.
Then, motion blur (Filters>Blur>Motion Blur) each of the noise layers. (Make sure preview is checked, and the mode is Linear. Play with your settings until it looks good to you.
Set each of your transparent noise layers to multiply, and merge them down with the image layers you're adding rain to.
Press Filters>Animation>Playback to view it.

It's actually a lot easier than it sounds. =P

There has to be more than one layer. If you merged ALL the layers together, don't do that. =P
And it doesn't matter if it's transparent or not. The only difference in the transparent layers is that you have to move the Alpha slider on the Scatter RGB step.

Red Ribbon: You need to save the image as a .gif image. Make sure when your saving it, you read all the options to it, or you'll screw up if you just hit "save" "save" "save". There is an option to save the .gif as an animation. When you get to the point where you're exporting the image, there should be a little drop down box that says "I don't care" in it. drop the box down and you will have two more options. One of them is to only play one frame at a time, and the other is to play all of them. Did this help? If it did, then check the animation you made, it should be there.

It would take a lot of skill to make one on Gimp, more than I have. Most people make them on Cinema 4D or 3D Studio Max.

P.S. Most tutorials provide the abstract render(c4d) used at the end of the tutorial.

If you have a pic that has MANY background Colors then it will not work...
Leo,could you tell me where the "color path" button is?

It would take a lot of skill to make one on Gimp, more than I have. Most people make them on Cinema 4D or 3D Studio Max.

P.S. Most tutorials provide the abstract render(c4d) used at the end of the tutorial.

I used C4d without any turtials.Look

C4Ds plain for just a background could look bland and placid at times. I would use a combination of both brushes and C4D's, and change the blending modes.

If your background is a solid color that is NOT present in the rest of your image, you can go to layer>transparency>color to alpha.

You don't cut it.

You have to register in the render gallery (assuming you're using Planet Renders) to get the full sized render. The full size is also transparent, so you can just shrink the image and work from there.

When you save it as jpeg it will let you lower the quality. Check the preview box and set the quality to where it needs to be.

Okay, it is not really at all possible to tell you an exact way to cut it out perfectly, but, one you have it cut out of the background, paste it on the sig/background or whatever your working on. Before you anchor it down, go to Layer> Scale Layer. There should be a counter on the length and width of the pixels and you can move them up and down when you get the right dimensions you want for it, hit "OK" and it will make the image smaller or bigger.

^sorry if spelling errors, typing really fast.^

Alcatraz
28 April 2007, 08:06 PM
Sorry about that, I was in a hurry to get it typed last night.

Now like I said, when you have the part of your image selected that you want to "shrink" or scale down, go to Layer> Scale Layer and a dialog box should pop up. It will have to little box's with your images dimensions(length and width). If you want it to look even and not all messed up, do not click the chain link beside these boxes. Just lower the dimensions. Then click "ok" and your image should be the size you wanted it. If you want the whole image to be smaller, the just go to Image> Scale Image and it will scale the entire picture to the size you want it.

Was that more clear? Because if it wasn't, then I can't help you.

Hm, perhaps you mean the frame thing.

Have your FG color set to black, select all on a new layer, edit>stroke selection 10. Change to white, and on the same layer, edit>stroke selection to 8. On the same layer, switch to black, edit>stroke selection 6. Set the layer to Overlay.

Outline text-

Alpha-to-select your text. Select>>Grow. Grow by about two pixels. Make a new layer. Fill the new layer with black. Raise the normal layer above the new layer.

Glow-

Duplicate your text. On the bottom layer, gaussian blur.

It is not a render until it is cut out. To get the render onto the sig, just copy and paste it. To remove the background, he/she probably did Layers>Transparency>Alpha To Channel. and then he or she just made a path around the image, made a selection, and then went to Select>Invert and then pressed Ctrl+K. Hope that helped.
