Lately there has been a pretty sharp jab in the number of threads that are asking me and the Moderators questions. To help this, I thought I would make this thread where you can ask me serious questions about the forums. If you have a question about something in the news/announcements or just generally how something works feel free to ask it here. As long as it's not something Classified then I will do my best to provide a good answer.

I have a feeling that this thread will be cluttered very quickly, so please make sure your question hasn't already been asked, that's all I ask of you. If it's been answered already then I probably won't answer it a second time. ;)

To clear it up...
When the forums go down, what's the problem of it?
Is it something us forumers are doing, or just the server itself?

It's probably a mixture of both. I believe the last time it was down for a LONG time was because the servers were actually being moved, according to Ben. Sometimes though, such as when these forums were launched, it was because of an overload; the server was attempting to connect and process too many people and connections at one time, so it crashed.

To the distaste of many users here I have been attempting to keep the forums as streamlined as possible. I took out some unneeded features (such as Who's Online at the bottom of the forums) so that the server would not have to keep up with and display these figures. Every little bit helps but when it comes to just the sheer number of connections at once, sometimes my efforts prove futile. :(

Is there anything we should try to stop doing, that might overload the server?

I know I re-read the post and asked a serious question.I at first only read the title and said "Anything?" and I was gonna ask about the avatar, the forums crashing, and if we can still have threads about avvys and siggys ratings in the off topic chat, such as ''rate the avatar/signature above you" threads.

Donnybrook
19 July 2007, 06:19 AM
Yeah I was wondering if we could shut down posting games, but just keep three. Rate the avatar above you, rate the signature above you, and rate the person above you. Those are the three most popular anyways.

Ok,since the the closing of the PG forum,im wondering if we can still have threads in the off topic chat such as ''rate the avatar/signature above you" threads.

Unfortunately I know there were good threads in there, but the bad outnumbered the good by a giant margin, and we all decided it was best to just sweep it all at once. Those threads are now considered "Post A Thons" again and are disallowed by the stanard forum rules. Sorry. :(

Tarheel, its not personal questions regarding RFS, it is support questions about the forum. My question RFS, why do you prefer to appear as 'offline' while online?

I appear as "Offline" so that nobody knows when I am watching. Other Moderators can see when I am online (since I appear with a * next to my name on the online list) though. I do this mainly because it helps catch spammers and trolls "in the act" because they think I am not here. But now, since people know I am hidden, they will have to keep guessing "do you think he is on right now". I am known to post/check at literally all times of day.

Really all I can suggest is that you guys don't constantly refresh pages on us, like when you are waiting for new posts and you keep hitting refresh and such. Really that's just kind of a habit and I'm not sure exactly how much that would help in the first place. Honestly, the forums could use a beefier system but those cost some bucks, much more than another copy of vBulletin I'm afraid.

Did you try adding the "http://" in front of the link? From my personal experience, sometimes those links don't work unless you add that extra bit in front of the link.

EDIT: I fixed it for you. For some reason, the URL tags didn't appear when I initially tried to fix the link, so I had to add them in.

What RFS means is that it's fine if it doesn't work and you just hit refresh once so it logs you back in.

However, just constantly holding down F5 when multiply people do it after the speed slows down quickly crashes the server. (Well that's what I think happens).

Server crashes normally happen at around 9PM to 3AM from experience in GMT(or GMT +1) timezone. RFS may be able to narrow it down more or give a more accurate estimate, but at a time that isn't too friendly for Miniclip employees.

Can't you get more servers, because I saw somebody at a different forum say that you can get servers, and there's like Highways, and there's a max amount of lanes. Now, if we haven't gotten to that max amount, why can't we get more of the lanes?

LINES, I don't understand what you are trying to say. It sounds quite a bit like bandwidth, howver you are suggest that a server is a highway, surely by adding more servers you are pretty much suggesting adding another highway to reduce the load on each high way. Perhaps someone like RFS will understand that analogy better.

Although a new server could be good, cost issues (new ones cost quite a bit of money) and technical issues of splitting the forum over two servers. (If each forum has its own server, both forums may be sharing the same server RFS would probably know).

It depends on why they are down. If it is maintenance or server operations then it can take days, or if it is over a weekend. However, if it is overload they may just need to reboot the servers.

The post icons were a mistake on RFS's part making it so they could not be used by regular users. The crash wasn't anything to do with them as far as I know of.

Edit: Forum tasks don't need to turn the forums off, the subforum was done without needing to turn it off. Installing mods may do, but generally either the forums run normally or you get a message saying no access. Here is a unaccurate way to tell whether it is something RFS related or whether it's server. Try viewing the forum, if you don't get a page then it's likely to be server issues, if it's a page saying access denied then it probably is RFS.

I used to fix capitals, but people were attempting to ask for too much, so we no longer change names at all.

They were down for at least 3 weeks-to a month at one time,I got annoyed and thats why I sighned up a little late for these new forums.

The longest I can remember them being down was about one week.

I can see RFS is online now.

Also RFS, When do most server crashes happen?

Usually if it's an overload it is during "peak hours", which is in the afternoon, about the time when school lets out in the middle of the USA.

Why can't I add a forum wise link to my signature, using the embedded link feature?

It should not be filtered, and it needs HTTP, I think Balth helped you fix that.

I remember one of the mods said that they were trying to get rid of the number of posts visible in our profiles. Did you guys just give up on that or does it not really matter anymore?

You have to edit a specific string of HTML/CSS in the vBulletin coding, which I am not authorized to see or edit, that is something Ben has to do, but I am fairly certain we scrapped that idea.

Hey! I wanted that "Whose online" Thing! I was trying to keep track on mods and admins there! But thats the reason (Bottom Paragraph) the posting games is closed? And is it closed temporary or forever?

Posting Games is permanently closed for good.

Can't you get more servers, because I saw somebody at a different forum say that you can get servers, and there's like Highways, and there's a max amount of lanes. Now, if we haven't gotten to that max amount, why can't we get more of the lanes?

Yes that was a lot of metaphors.

Honestly, it is cost. New servers can cost thousands of dollars for a good one that can handle a LOT of traffic. The forums are also NOT the main attraction of Miniclip. Yes, 45,000 total members is a very nice number, but that is nothing compared to the huge traffic that the games get per month. According to Big Boards, a rating website, Miniclip is #1680th out of all forums online.

I have a few questions for our favorite dragon.

1. When users are perma-banned, are they IP-Banned too?
2. I'm just curious, are you considering any users to carry the coveted Moderator status? (without saying names of course)

Permabanned is not IP Banned. The ban just does not expire, ever. That is the only difference. Being Banned and being Permabanned will bring up the exact same banned page.

At this time we are in the process of talking about new Moderators but I'm not exactly allowed to say who.

Will there ever be another mod this year? Will there be another sub-forum again?

More than likely yes to new mods. If the need arises, maybe we will have a new subforum too. Moderators and Forums are based on a supply/demand kind of basis.

Exactly why (how) are the forums back up and running less than a day after the crash, rather than the usual three days?

By the way, now I can actually view/use the "post icons" when before, I could not see them, did the crash have something to do with it, or is it the fact that you made the exclamation mark a "mod only" icon?

Miniclip's offices are not open on the weekends. If the servers crash on Friday, there is nobody available to deal with it until Monday. If the servers go down during the week then normally there is someone available the next day to restore them. I do not have access to Miniclip's servers from where I am.

The crash did not involve me playing with the Post Icons.

I know, but does RFS need to shut down the forum to close a sub-forum?

If I "turn off" the forum then it will just display a "No Permission" message to you along with a reason. So far, the only time this has been done was when the forums were not prepared for launch and the URL to these forums returned a "Forum Not Ready, Launching in March" message.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're only on the forums to gain credit and reputation for silly ideas, please discontinue posting here. It's just a game, and no harm is being done if threads and ideas get mixed up. Each Moderator works differently, maybe there was a mistake somewhere along the line.

5 Infractions gets you a perma ban.

If you have a reversed infraction, it does not count as an infraction anymore.

If you have an expired infraction, it just means the 10 days have passed and the rank is gone, but it still counts as an infraction towards the 5 you need to be Perma Banned.

From the looks of it, you copied the link of your signature from the forum, and not from Imageshack or another image uploading site. Every time you upload a signature through these forums and you copy the link, the link WILL remain the same, but the image will be different.

Or, you could have simply copied the link to the first signature and then somehow made a mistake and didn't copy the links to the other two correctly. Just make sure you right click and press "copy" and don't do the "ctrl + V" shortcut on your keyboard.

There are no "undercover moderators" on these forums. I believe you're thinking of the "invisible" option in which a moderator is online, but he or she shows up as offline. (Also known as hidden status.)

Well, spammers usually dont do any spamming while a moderator is online, if they have the Hidden Status on, spammers will think no mods are online when they actually are. So it would be easier to catch spammers.

The beauty of hidden status is that it allows us moderators, as RFS stated earlier, to catch spammers in the act.

As for us looking at "a thread", that means that we are viewing a thread that is deleted, located in the staff forum, or located in the reported posts forum.

You mean ranks? Because of when the forums were firstly open(the new) some people spammed just to get that post count up and ge a better rank.

So they closed the forum, and deleted them.

Forumwise is phpBB, with phpBB you can make a rank that is naughty penguin, just set it as a special rank in the rank page and then on the user options in the admin panel in the admin only section it will say Special Rank and then select the rank.

You can only take away avatar and PM privledges I think as far as I know of with the default phpBB version. Signatures are not in that. So it is both yes and no.

No, a Bribble screenshot isn't sufficient evidence. If the user wishes to be banned, he or she must make a thread on this forum because anyone can impersonate someone on a Bribble chat and request a ban.

Post Counts and Post Ranks were stripped from the forums because of spamming. Getting rid of them helped GREATLY.

RFS i was woundering how you uys make the naughty penguin ranks

Sorry, I have no experience with the software Forumwise uses. I am trained and knowledgeable in vBulletin only. :(

The only time we consider things outside the forums are for underaged users, and then we go in and look up IP information and such to make a match, because that is a LEGAL issue.

RFS, are pears awesome, or what?

Well, I have a question:

How long will Caboose still ''Trainee Moderator'' , I mean he left.

I don't know where Caboose has gone, and I am unable to contact him.

I've wondered this, why did you move the old Club Penguin forum on the Miniclip site to here? Was it because of spam and people just wanted a new start? I've just wondered that in the past few days.

Simply put, Club Penguin was killing Miniclip's already stagnating community, and everyone absolutely hated Club Penguin's community. That and the fact that the forums were growing too large to keep as a subforum on Miniclip, so something had to be done about it.

Well this is mainly for the main MC forum.

To be honest, when I go to the other MC, I go there for GC and then the fun forum. Whenever GC was boring and dead ( which is usually the case ) I went and had some fun at that forum. I could express myself in the trillion thread and basically be myself. It was FUN. And now thats gone and I am kinda dissapointed because now MC is dead again. Here I am not worried because this place is always rockin. But now I feel MC is not what it was without that forum. So I have a proposal.

Why not make it have similar rules like the debate forum? Ban the users who over use the forum or don't use it right. I know there were mainly 2 people who used the Happy Land wrongly * Cough American Girl and Colerd Cough *.. So why not just ban them and a few others from that forum? Otherwise, I thought it was used alright...

Honestly, the average age of this forum is GREATLY below that of Miniclip, and so is the maturity as a whole. The Debate Forum will just be a bunch of "yah i agree" posts and there will be no debating at all. As for the PG forum warnings, there was a pinned thread saying not to abuse it. I Ate A Fish had a post saying that it was getting out of hand, and at one point in time FunnyBoy and Notre I think posted some panicked warnings. You guys had warnings.

I was just wondering, can the Club Penguin Staff oversay any of the forums choices?

It depends. If there is a decision, Moderator, or addition that may harm Club Penguin, then they have a say. However, I am also the "Owner" here, so technically if there is reason enough on my side, then I can override back. It really depends on how each choice reflects Club Penguin, the game AND company. In short, yes in some aspects they can overpower me.

What is being a mod like? fun boring what? I know you have to be dedicated and all but how is it?

It has its good days and bad days. Sometimes you log on and see that you have fan art and some fun threads to post in, and sometimes you log on and find yourself in the middle of a spam attack. It can be fun and frustrating in the same day.

In the CP Fan Art Sub-Forum, are we allowed to make our own teams just like in the Non-CP Gallery Sub-Forum?

It depends on who they are NOW and how well they can be trusted. I have been banned twice in my history at Miniclip but now I'm obviously much higher up than the RFS of old. I used to be a bad guy but I flipped it around, and I'm making a difference. Anything is possible.

I'm not sure. It follows the same skin as the main Miniclip forums because technically this place is still a Miniclip subforum, just a big one. It has some minor customizations to its theme though, along with a different set of forum smilies.

Question: Do you think army threads are spam? Also if they were deleted do you think it would change the forums?Good or bad?(sorry if this has been answered)

ACP was kicked out of Miniclip for spam, and the thread here is a literal ban trap because of all the spam. (Nice avatar, I laughed.)

It is infinite, only limited by the storage space offered on your server or hosting plan (or both).

Few questions about vbulliten:

-How much does it cost
-Can you make your own buttons to put on the forum?
-What are some features vbulliten has that you don't use?

vBulletin is $85 per year or $160 "for life". There are extra costs for things like phone support, maintenance, and other things like that.

vBulletin is entirely customizable in a number of ways, and virtually everything on the page can be changed in some way, including buttons. Miniclip's forums and RFSHQ's forums both are vBulletin software and they look completely different. One of the subforums on RFSHQ plays music and has customized banners while another is bright purple with hip hop culture references. Most of the tables and display codes have been altered.

Right now we currently are not using things like the Reputation system (Karma I think it's called) which lets you rate users either + or - for each post. Private Messaging is also disabled, along with that bottom Who's Online box. PM's are gone for user safety reasons, and WO is gone for server optimization.

I normally check at least once a day unless something prevents me from doing so. Id say each day though, in between chatting with other moderators and doing daily things I put in about 2 solid hours of moderation and such each day, everyday.

As for the Fun Forum Facts thing I posted, it does not keep up with hours. That would be server-overkill. I don't believe that is even an option we have available actually.

First, you must acquire at least 15 posts in order to post any link or image on these forums. After acquiring those 15 posts, just paste your link and then place image tags around it. It should look like this when you're typing your post in which you would change www.example.com to the link desired:

Wait, how did you become an Admin? Secret?

Basically whenever Club Penguin debuted on Miniclip in March 2006, the forums there quickly became one of the largest and fastest growing communities (thanks Vital Viper, you and your 80 referrals... ). The two game developer mods (Screenhog/rsnail) were not enough to keep up with it, and most of the existing staff at the time (Guitarist, CrazyBot, Jediskipdogg, Ben, and Ambermouse) had no idea what was going on in that forum or community.

Myself and a couple of others were literally taking "pot shots" at people, the equivalent of just pushing people around to rowl them up, but because of our activity there we actually KNEW what was going on in the forums. Since I had been spearheading a lot of good ideas on the forums already (I had the art forum created, some sub forums, and also suggested changed to the ban system) Ben asked me essentially, "If you promise you'll work on not being as mean, we would really love to have you aboard as a Moderator."

So basically I took up the orange name that was completely unexpected and a big surprize to me, and I got to work in sorting out the CP forums. I have a lot of experience using and manipulating vBulletin software (RFSHQ runs vBulletin and we have lots of great ideas and plugins running) so Ben offered me a spot as Administrator a few months later to further handle the now massive community. Basically I could now speak and act directly on behalf of what you all wanted, making new subforums, banning the IPs of bad spammers, and tweaking some various forum bits.

In December I took it upon myself to write up a lengthy proposal and sent it to the powers above asking for a second vBulletin, and two months later these forums were created. And, basically, that's the story. :P If I can turn around from being banned and warned by the staff to literally running the place, then mostly anyone can if they put effort into it.

Well, RFSHQ stuff isn't exactly related to these forums, but you have some good questions here. We buy our domains from GoDaddy.com, they are $8 per year. Our host is DreamHost.com, and they are a monthly payment instead of a yearly payment. As for RFSHQ being popular, I really wish I could say it was, but I don't consider it to be. We've been active for over three years and have yet to break 1,000 members or the 100,000th rank on Alexa.com. Mostly though, we do not advertise at all, so it is word of mouth that gets visitors.

Moderators are "volunteers", Administrators are employees of the company, so in short yes.

How come mods can have signatures that are bigger than ours?

Staff members have earned the right to enjoy a fee bonuses that other users do not get. Among these little bonuses are bigger signature limits and custom title permissions.

What is the biggest problem on the forums?

Right now I would have to say users that post just to post and offer nothing to the community.

RFS, when a post is reported, does it show who reported the post in the staff forum?

Yes, when a post is reported it says:
- Who reported the post
- Why (What you type into the reason box)
- A copy of the offending post
- Who posted the offending post
- A link to the post

Forumadmin is the first member and has the rank istrator as well as the account ADMINISTRATOR.Is that the same person or different people?

Some Admins and Mods have broken ranks because when we reset and recounted ranks (to fix the Banned display), parts of the forum filter started popping out lots of odds and ends with our accounts.

Don't really relate to the forum, but I was wondering anywho.

Do you think there is going to be a coming-of-time of you leaving MC? If so, when?

Are you going to buy the new Harry potter book tonight, or quite frankly you could give a monkey's azz?

What was worse: CP back in the days of MC or the recent outburts of RR forum?

I don't see myself leaving anytime soon. Hopefully all of you will get sick of me instead of the other way around. :D

As for HP, I could care less. I don't read those books or see the movies. :P

Hey RFS, I have a question for you. As you know, many of the members here ask Club Penguin moderators to do many things in Club Penguin. This includes blocking certain words and adding rules against things such as trading penguins.

My question is, if you were to ask a Club Penguin moderator to make some changes to Club Penguin, would they listen to you more then they listen to us?

Thanks in advance.

I don't exactly understand the question here. :(

I mean like in Miniclip, you used to be RadioFSoftware, but then when adding you to mod, you became RFS. When Tetsu was added, he became Tetsumonchii. So how come you guys had to do that in Miniclip, but here you can just make the user a mod?

Question: When the Forums are down, how can you guys fix it if no one can get on it? When the forums are down, I always see this message "Page Cannot be Found", so how can you fix the Forums if you can see that message again and again? It won't even let me log on so how can the server knows if you are an Administrator or not?

Before I Forgot: This sounds like a "noob" question but how can you add a small number to your name? Like Spem formerly Guardiancubed( small three). Also, scootz has a small TM in his name too. How do you do it?

Question Number 3: If you have a Naughty Penguin Rank, does it wear out like Infraction Ranks?

Am I annoying:?:: How long does it take for a Trainee Moderator to reach his Moderator Rank? Because Caboose has been wearing his rank for aaaagggeeesss.

Yes, you're Right. I got another Question again: Where do I post Glitches/Cheats I can found on the Forums? Because I know a cheat that lets you change the title of your threads without the help of any Mod. Wanna Proof?

Yes, even though it is past 45 seconds.

RFS?

I have made two Poster of the Month threads before. In March and April.
Both of them went well, just the Best Posters did not show much interest.

Testu had closed this one saying it is a popularity thread.

I asked to make a thread about it and RFS said yes, as long as Moderators are not completely involved and they are not.

Here is my thread when I asked if I could make this back in March.
http://penguinforum.miniclip.com/showthread.php?t=448

Is it still allowed or not?
I really see no popularity involved in it.

Probably not, and honestly I am not about to act as a vehicle for everyone's ideas, so don't send them to me (I'll trash them).

1. We don't fix them, someone else does.

2. They are symbols, you add them while your register.

1. We have no ranks because they do NOT follow the same filter and moderation as other parts of the forum, plus they would be too much of a hassle for people to figure out.

You used to have a penguin account called Radiofsftwr. What happened?

I registered that account to test out features in the game back when I was just a Moderator, so I knew what was going on with updates so I could help out others on the forums. Now I have a lot more on my plate to keep up with, and I also have a team of moderators who know more about the game than I do. For all I know the account has been banned/deleted for inactivity.

As far as I know, a Journal is an outside modification to the forum. We don't have that feature. Some User CP features that are disabled is really just Custom Title. You have access to everything else.

And yes, I still have my job at the movies. Been there for 14 months now.

If by "A" you mean a ruder term for "butt", yes. If by "C" you mean a ruder term for "number 2", yes. And if by "D" you mean a ruder term for "darn", yes.

Sure! Someone posted I believe some kind of emoticon helper program. It's not restricted to games-only, but if you're going to post a new thread you STILL need some kind of demo or beta to test.

The Debate forum will not be making an appearance here. As for future subforums, no one can be certain. These forums have a subforum for Pokemon, while MC doesn't. Likewise, MC has a Debate forum, these don't.
