It was probably because the disc has dust and scratches. Try cleaning off the disc several times and it should work.

Clean disk
Check for dust, scratches, etc.
Check dust in PS
Check malfuntions
See if the disk was compatible.

I would try dusting the inside of your PS2 if nothing works. It collects a lot of dust.

If anything else works, checkj the manual, or send it to repairment.
