PS3 Help please

Right,i need help with my internet connection on the PS3, i plug the the ethernet cable in to my cable modem and the other side in to the PS3 i go to internet connection setting nd follow the things which i dont understand and then it checks it and it says the IP adress can not be obtained beacause it has timed out and it didnt try the internet beacause the IP failed.Can you give me some help on this one please?;)

Refresh your IP, it'll then connect to it because it's being told what it is.

Well, I don't have a modem, so I wouldn't know how to refresh it with modem.

Make sure your connection is enabled and is not on wireless
